Linear Regression

Assigned Friday, February 10, 2012

Due Monday, February 20, 8:30 AM

Given:

Farmers in Elephant Butte Irrigation District (EBID) grow several different crops,

changing with both time and location. The Data page provides acreage for

the three biggest crops, alfalfa, cotton, and pecans for the period

1953-2008.

Find:

From these data, develop two linear models: one relating acreage of

cotton to acreage of alfalfa, and the other relating acreage of cotton to acreage

of alfalfa. If C is acres of cotton, A is acres of alfalfa, and P is acres of pecans,

these models would be:

Estimate of cotton acres as a function of alfalfa acres
Estimate of cotton acres as a function of pecan acres
Determine:

A. Slope a for both models

B. Intercept b for both models

C. Standard error S of both models

D. r2 for both models

E. Prepare a graph of cotton acreage as a function of alfalfa showing the observed

data as points as well as the regression line

F. Prepare a graph of cotton acreage as a function of pecans showing the observed

data as points as well as the regression line

G. Which regression model best predicts cotton acreage? Explain your answer.

NOTES: Be sure that your name is printed, not hand written on each page that you submit.

Check your significant figures and be sure you label your answers clearly and include units.

You may use either canned functions or write your own formulae.
