Week 5: Activity Perception: Recently Seen Film – Avatar
In Avatar, humans are seen invading a distant planet Pandora, which is inhabited by Na’vi, who are similar to humans but have different biological properties and are devoted to Eywa, their personified mother nature. A thorough and rational assessment of the film and its plot made me realise that the Na’vi people on Pandora symbolic representation of humans of the past, humans who were not blessed with the knowledge of science and depended largely on the grace of the natural powers.
The humans, on the other hand, depict the modern civilised men, who prefer economic growth to spirituality and sustaining of natural resources. As affirmed by Westbrook et al. (2018), humans have become equally ignorant towards nature as that of their growing awareness about human economy. The conflict shows a struggle of power between Pantheistic beliefs and materialistic claims. Although the conflict is majorly drawn between humans and Na’vi, at the spot of the protagonist of the plot a human has been positioned, which also made me realised that the film had tried to hint at the fact that somewhere amid the depletion of ethical values and love for nature, humans have choice and it is this choice that makes all the difference of the future of human civilisation. The film appeared to be a source of spiritual education for me; it also gave glimpse of human politics and conflicting values.
My friend X, on the other hand felt that the film was a waste of time, and felt that the film was morally idealistic, however not at all realistic in approach. As mentioned by Long et al. (2018), varied perception of individuals lead to diverse opinions for and against a single, object event or aspect. He criticised the fact that Avatar depicted the majority of the human race as aggressive, colonialist and showed the advent of science as means of materialistic gain. He also felt that the symbolic depiction evolutions of animals on the planet Pandora was assumption based and had no scientific base to support it.
Week 6 Motivation: Motivation Technique of Top European Business Organisations
It is found that all of the successful business companies in United Kingdom as well as in Europe tend to develop their unique set of employee motivation techniques. However, seen from a broad perspective, it can be said that emphasis on employee culture, direct profit sharing with employees, providing of health cover for the family members of the employees, adapting non bureaucratic culture by management, scope for professional growth, non-financial incentives of organisational recognition have been able to motivate the employees consistently (Great Place to Work, 2018). As mentioned by Dechawatanapaisal (2018), caring for the employees generates profit for business in the long term as the retention of employees and keeping them motivated generates consistently high performance and better profit margins.
It is found that companies such as Autodesk, Intuit UK and Natilik focus on making working environment less formal, well bonded and enjoyable to motivate and retain high level of dedication of the employees. On the other hand companies such as Lansons and Baird offer their employee direct share of the company stocks, which makes their future secure financially and motivates the employees to remain loyal to the organisation and perform better regularly (Great Place to Work, 2018). Opposite to that of companies that offer financial incentives, European companies such as Sales force, Cisco, Hilton and DHL Express offer high level of...
