COTask 1:

The following figure shows the bearing assembly system

The assembly system has the following components:

♦ Conveyor belt: transports the ‘component set’ (bearing housing and bearing) from

the previous process which placed the bearings in position on top of the housing.

♦ Pneumatic switch: this will be activated when a ‘component set’ comes into contact

with it.

♦ Cylinder A: when activated will push the ‘component set’ onto the assembly jig.

♦ Cylinder C: when activated pushes the bearing into the bearing housing.

♦ Cylinder B: when activated pushes the finished assembly down the chute.

System sequence — design specification

1. The ‘component set’ is detected at the end of the conveyor by the pneumatic switch

2. Cylinder A is activated and extends at a speed of 10mm/s (+/- 3mm/s) and remains

extended

3. Cylinder C is activated at approximately half maximum speed after Cylinder A is

fully extended

4. Cylinder C retracts at maximum speed after it has been fully extended

5. Cylinder A is retracted at maximum speed after Cylinder C is fully retracted

6. Cylinder B is extended at approximately half maximum speed after Cylinder A is

fully retracted

7. Cylinder B is retracted at maximum speed once it has reached its extended limit

Logic sequence: Start, A+, C+, C-, A-, B+, B

Note:

1. The assemblies arrive at intervals which allow one cycle to be completed before the

next one arrives.

2. It is acceptable for settings at ‘half maximum speed’ to b

Task

Design, assemble and test a fluid power circuit/system that will control the assembly of

the bearing and housing.

♦ Design and draw up a circuit that will fulfil the above design specification

♦ Draw up a parts list of all the components used

♦ Select the components and assemble the circuit

♦ Draw up a test strategy for the circuit, including safety procedures to be followed

♦ Carry out the test strategy using the safety procedures on the circuit and record the

results

♦ Modify and retest the circuit to meet the design specification — if required.

A report should be drawn up that will include the following headings. The report should be approximately 250–500 words including text, tables etc.

Report Headings

♦ Selection of components to be used to build the circuit

♦ Circuit diagram

♦ Parts list

♦ Test results

♦ Six Heath and Safety requirements

♦ Comparison — circuit performance against design specification

♦ Circuit modifications (where necessary)
