Continue to record the following information every day:

  1. your mood at the end of the day (on a 7-point scale, where 1=bad mood and 7= good mood);

  2. the number of cups of caffeine drinks you had;

  3. the number of cups of non-caffeinated drinks you had;

  4. the number of hours you spent looking at a phone, computer screen, TV, etc.

(NOTE: round hours to the nearest half hour ; count each drink - however big or small - as one drink. And remember to report the date on which you recorded your data.)

For this homework assignment, I will ask you to essentially re-do Homework 2-A, but with last week's data (i.e., Monday, April 12-Friday, April 16). I will add a few questions to complete the section on variance and standard deviation.

For the mood scores you got last week, answer the following questions:

  1. Report your mood scores (and the date for each).

  2. Compute the mean of your moods scores from (1) above.

  3. Transform the data in (1) above by subtracting the mean that you computed in (2) from each score; these are the mean deviations of the N=5 original scores in (1).

  4. Square each of the transformed scores that you obtained in (3); these are the squared mean deviations of the N=5 original scores in (1).

  5. Compute the mean of these squared scores; this is the variance.

  6. Take (the positive value of) the square root of the variance you computed in (5); this is the standard deviation.

  7. Divide each of the mean deviations you got in (3) above by the standard deviation you got in (6); these are the z-scores of the original N=5 scores in (1).

  8. (NEW THIS WEEK): What is the mean of the z-scores in (7)? HINT: If you got something very far from 0, you made an error somewhere.

  9. (NEW THIS WEEK): What is the standard deviation of the z-scores in (7)? HINT: If you got something very far fro 1, you made an error somewhere.

  10. List all possible samples of size n=3 that you can obtain from the raw data you reported in (1) above. HINT: There should be ten such samples, some of which may repeat if you reported having the same mood on different days.

  11. For each sample of size n=3 that you listed in (10), compute the mean of the sample. (You should get ten means for the ten samples of size n=3 you listed in (10).)

  12. What is the mean of the ten sample means you found in (11)? Hint: As a check of your work, your answer should be the same as the mean of the raw scores you got in (2).

  13. (NEW THIS WEEK): What is the variance of the ten sample means you found in (11)? Is this larger or smaller than the variance of the raw scores that you found in (5)?

  14. (NEW THIS WEEK): What is the standard deviation of the ten sample means you found in (11)? Is this larger or smaller than the standard deviation of the raw scores that you found in (6)?

2) Mean for Mood Scores
5+4+6+3+4= 22
22/5 = 4.4
3) Mean Deviations of the N=5 Original
5 - 4.4 = 0.6
4 - 4.4 = -0.4
6 - 4.4 = 1.6
3 - 4.4 = -1.4
4 - 4.4 = -0.4
4) Squared Mean Deviations
0.6² = 0.36
-0.4² = 0.16
1.6² = 2.56
-1.4² = 1.96
-0.4² = 0.16
5) Variance
0.36 + 0.16 + 2.56 + 1.96 + 0.16 = 5.2
5.2/ 5 = 1.04
6) sqrt(1.04) = 1.02
7) Z Scores
0.6 ÷ 1.02 = 0.58
-0.4 ÷ 1.02 = -0.39
1.6 ÷ 1.02 = 1.57
-1.4 ÷ 1.02 = -1.37
-0.4 ÷ 1.02 = -0.39
8)
0.58 + (-0.39) + 1.57 + (-1.37) + (-0.39) = 0
0 ÷ 5 = 0
9)
0.58 - 0 = 0.58(²) = 0.34
-0.39 - 0 = -0.39(²) = 0.15
1.57 - 0 = 1.57(²) = 2.46
-1.37 - 0 = -1.37(²) = 1.88
-0.39 - 0 = -0.39 (²) = 0.15
0.34+ 0.15 + 2.46 + 1.88 + 0.15 = 4.98
4.98 / 5 = 0.996
sqrt(0.996) = 0.997
