Learning Activity #1

In order for you to better understand the process of fluid balance, please read the following chapter and then complete the questions below:

Willis, L. M. (eds.). (2020).Fluids and electrolytes made incredibly easy(pp. 3–20). Philadelphia: Wolters Kluwer-Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins.

In your own words, respond to the following four questions in approximately 500 words total for the whole activity.

  1. What are the four body fluid compartments?

  2. Body fluid is usually found in mixed forms. Describe each of the three body fluid types.

  3. Describe the ways in which fluids and solutes move within the body. Explain the processes of diffusion, osmosis, and active transport. Understanding both diffusion and osmosis is essential to moving forward in this course.

  4. In addition to osmosis, and within the vascular system, hydrostatic pressure and plasma colloid osmotic pressure, influence fluid movement. Describe the difference between the two pressures.

Answer to Question 1
The four fluid compartments of the body are labelled as Intracellular Fluid (ICF), Total Body Water (TBW), Transcellular Fluid (TCF) and Extracellular Fluid (ECF). Human body originally consists of 75% of water for an infant, 50-60% for an adult man and woman and 45% for an old person. The human body's liver and kidney contain the highest amount of water, which is nearly 80% and teeth have the lowest proportion of it that is 8-10% (Gurgul, 2019).
The ICF lies within the cell and it is the main element of cytoplasm. It is responsible for making around 60% of human body water and for an adult human being ICF encompasses of about 25 liters of water. The ECF accounts for the rest 30% of total water and about 20% of ECF is found in the form of plasma.
It travels through the blood vessels and carries various materials. Lastly, the ICF lies within these two types of fluid. It is found in the cell membrane and it contains many dissolved ions, along with other components, necessary for all the cellular processes.
Answer to Question 2
