Introduction
Creativity, Innovation, and Invention are all important. Creativity is when something new and original is developed, this can be an idea or a product. Innovation is when an appropriate change is made to the already created product or idea to add value (Cropley, Kaufman & Cropley 2011). Invention on the other hand is when a new production or service is developed based on a previously developed product or service, this is not an original product, but it is an invention of an already existing product (Amabile 1988).
Though creativity a
nd innovation have no one singular definition, it is a general convention that creativity and innovation should be novel, useful, appropriate, and original to give something a tag of creativity and innovation (Gurteen 1998).
In this paper, we will look at how creativity and innovation are important and the actual meaning of the same, and at the last, we will see how they can be applied to an organization I want to set up.
Innovation has many attributes and the same developed by Baregheh are:
· Nature of innovation
· Type of innovation
· Stages of innovation
· Social context
· Means of innovation
· Aim of innovation
Like innovation creativity has many attributes too which are defined by the use of creativity, the main elements of creativity are:
· Domain-relevant skills
· Creativity-relevant skills
· Intrinsic task motivation
Creativity
Creativity is the ability to develop original things, this can be an idea or a representation of an idea which requires a lot of effort. Over time creativity has become more and more important because entrepreneurship has been associated with creativity and now entrepreneurship is all about creating something which is of value to the users.
Creativity is a tough thing to undertake because often time it is mixed with innovation and invention which are less than what creativity is and therefore cannot be compared with creativity.
Amabile (1988) provided a model of creativity which can be used by individuals, this model consists of three main elements which are:
· Domain-relevant skills: Domain-relevant skills are the skills that the individuals themselves possess, and this is from the individual’s background, past experiences which they have, knowledge about specific domains, and other technical skills.
· Creativity-relevant skills: Creativity-relevant skills are the ability to explore, experiment and pursue work from a different perspective. These skills help in understanding the complexities and answering questions which are relevant to creativity
· Intrinsic task motivation: Intrinsic task motivation is the ability to perform the task, this refers to the internal motivation which is required to complete and perform the task of creativity. Self-motivation is one of the key factors to stimulate creativity
Therefore, creativity is more context-specific Creativity is often considered an individual task, but the outcome of creativity is a group collaboration.
Creativity is therefore viewed as propulsion, which means that it is the individual whose ability defines creativity, where it can be taken to from where it currently stands to where the creators want to take it.
The Propulsion theory of creative contribution which defines different types of creative contributions has given 8 different types which are:
1. Replication
2. Redefinition
3. Forward incrementation
4. Advanced forward incrementation
5. Redirections
6. Reconstructions/Redirection
7. Reinitiation
8. Integration
Appendix 1 has the Linear vs. Lateral Thinking chart which talks about how linear and lateral thinking helps in creativity and also how both can be used to ensure that entrepreneurship is most effectivity. Where linear thinking has the following components:
· Use of logic
· Step-by-step approach
The components of lateral thinking are:
· Creative thinking
· Open to possibilities
Both lateral and linear thinking are important for entrepreneurship as this requires lots of creative work to ensure that the entrepreneurship is effective.
Innovation
Innovation in today’s world is driven by entrepreneurship (Bessant and Tidd 2015), also innovation has creativity as its basic element because innovation is further advancing the already existing ideas or products (Edquist 2010).
Innovation though is very broad, but the four main dimensions for innovation according to Bessant and Tidd 2015 are:
· Product innovation: Product innovation refers to the changes made in the products which are produced. An example of product innovation is the development of electric cars which is a product innovation as the innovation is being done in an already produced product, i.e., car
· Process innovation: Process innovation is a change in any of the processes required to develop a product or service. An example of process innovation can be the embedding of the system of development with the service platform
· Position innovation: Changes in how the product will be marketed, or positioned in the market are referred to as position innovation
· Paradigm innovation: Change in the model which governs a product's market is called paradigm innovation. For example, Henry Ford changed the perception that cars are not luxury products by mass production of the same
Innovation has many attributes and the same developed by Baregheh are:
