Introduction
Globalisation is the phenomenon of the interdependence of the world's economies on the trade in goods, services and investment across the countries. Globalisation has changed the way businesses operate and how employees are hired. While Globalisation has its own advantages and benefits. It also has some moral and ethical challenges, which come along with its large-scale implementation.
Ethical Challenges of Globalisation and their Effects on Decent Working Conditions
The first issue comes in the form of Labour Issues. The first key feature that has been appealing for business to undergo globalisation was the offer of cheap labour. Countries such as India and China have huge populations. This leads to franchises being able to set up plants across these countries and pay minimum wages to employees (Sierra Velez, 2020). This has led to many problems, as these corporations tend to have questionable work conditions.
Applying Ethical Theoretical Frameworks of Kantian Theory to the Analysis
This, according to the Kantian Theory, would be a morally wrong thing to do. As the corporation is putting the employees in danger and not paying them enough to sustain their lives. This is especially wrong when the corporation is owned by a group of people who earn millions while many employees need government support in order to carry on. It also in many cases violates their human rights.
For example, In an Indian H and M factory human rights commissions found out that most workers were not earning a living wage. This is a core human right to be able to earn a minimum wage (Ogar & Ogar, 2018). This was also included in their code of conduct. However, the company had not been paying a living wage since 2013, when the factory was set up with false promises. This deliberate manipulation and lies to the workers from the end of the corporation can be considered under the Kantian philosophy to be a wrong deed.
