Introduction
Safe sport initiatives are designed to provide safe sport conditions for youth and athletes. One of the most prominent initiatives functional in the area covering the United Kingdom of Great Britain is the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU). CPSU forms a part of the NSPCC. It is funded by Sport England, Sport Northern Ireland, Sport Wales and UK Sport (CPSU, n.d.).
The organization was founded in 2001, when a number of high-profile cases surfaced regarding the abuse of young athletes. CPSU aims at improving the conditions of young athletes through providing them with safe conditions and child protection practices within sport organisations. It hopes to ensure that all children and youth can be safe as they practice sports (CPSU, n.d.).
Overview of CPSU activities
CPSU is known to play a deliberate role within the sporting landscape of UK. The organization works in direct association with major sports councils in the country including the UK Sport Councils, National Governing Bodies (NGBs), Active Partnerships as well as several other organisations. It helps and assists organisations in implanting and upkeeping the safeguarding practices of athletes in order to provide safe and entertaining sporting experience while reducing the risk of abuse and injury (CPSU, n.d.).
Functions of CPSU
The organization works with a number of national bodies, activity providers and clubs, assisting them in developing procedures and policies that enable safety and inclusion of different parties involved in sports. In doing this the organization engages in the following activities-
· The organization has set up Standards for Safeguarding children in sports. It assists organizations in adhering to and following these standards.
· The organization has set up a framework process through which standards can be implemented across entire sports organizations. It assists these organizations in implementing this framework process.
· The organization also engages in providing expert advice to sports organizations, National Governing Bodies, clubs, coaches, partnerships and parents.
· The organization engages in developing and delivering sports specific training and resources and guidance.
· The organization commissions and supports research into various issues through evidence-based work for furthering sports interests.
