1. Citations and references play a major role in academic writing as it places one`s academic work in setting, exhibits the expansiveness and pro
fundity of one`s research, and recognizes others' work. They are necessary because they provide due credit to the writers and the sources from which information is taken and the works of varied academic writers are acknowledged (Hsiao, T. M & Chen, 2018). The inclusion of citations and references is necessary also because it shows the readers that intensive research has been carried out for writing the paper by providing details of the sources from which information is accumulated, thus enhancing the quality of the academic paper. Plagiarism is considered to be the theft of author`s ideas and quotes which is another major issue that can be avoided with the help of references and citations as the ideas of other writers and scholars are given due credit and acknowledgement. It helps the readers in distinguishing between the original ideas and the ideas taken from other sources. With citations and references, the readers get evidence that supports the arguments projected in the academic paper. References and citations would act as sources for the readers if they want to gain added information about the topic.
When ideas or quotes of other writers are included in the academic paper, as for example from journals, articles, books, etc, then one should cite the original author. Even in case when paraphrasing or summarizing of ideas of other authors are done, then citations and references should be included.
2. Literature review acts as a framework of a research work and it varies from different forms of academic writing. Primary difference between literature review and an essay is that the latter focus only on the topic but the former focuses on supporting evidence from existing literature in order to support the arguments related to the topic.
