Culminating Activity Landon Follows To help fight the boredom and monotony of self-isolation, Mr. Braeckman and Sam have designed and built a balloon-powered car (see diagram). PART A The first thing Mr. Braeckman and Sam do is blow air into the balloon, put it on the ground, let it go and watch as the car accelerates forward while the air is released and then gradually decelerate as friction causes it to come to rest. A motion sensor has been set up to create a position-time and velocity-time graph of the car. (1) Download Logger Lite using the file in the Google Drive folder “8. Culminating Activity” OR from the website https://www.vernier.com/downloads/logger-lite-updates/ (2) In the Google Drive folder “8. Culminating Activity”, download the graph file for YOUR BIRTHDAY MONTH.  (3) Open the graph file with Logger Lite 1.  (a)   For what length of time was the car moving? (b)   For the time in (a), what were the initial and final positions of the car? (c)    What was the total displacement of the car for the time in (a)? (d)    Determine the average velocity of the car for the time in (a).   2. (a)    For the time in #1(a), what was the initial velocity of the car? (b)    For the time in #1(a), what was the final velocity of the car? (c)    Determine the average acceleration of the car for the time in #1(a). (d)    Was the car’s acceleration constant? How can you tell? 3. The car’s mass was 174 g .  Answer these questions: (a) Determine the magnitude of the net force acting on the balloon car. (b) How much work was done by the net force? (c) Draw a fully-labeled free body diagram of a balloon car when it is speeding up. (d) What type of work (positive, negative or zero) did each force do on the car?  4. Using the mass from #3, answer these questions: (a) What was the initial kinetic energy of the car? The final kinetic energy? (b) Use your answer to (a) to calculate the net work. (c) Compare your answers to 3(b) and 4(b). Are they the same/similar? The net work calculated from these two different methods will be equal only if the net force is constant.  Explain how your velocity-time graph can tell you whether or not the net force is constant.  (d) How much power was generated by the balloon car? PART B 1. Mr. Braeckman and Sam determine the force of friction that acts on their car while its moving. To do this, they perform the following experiment: Sam gives the car a quick push and Mr. Braeckman measures the distance and time the car travels in coming to rest. There is no air in the balloon and the measurements are taken AFTER the car has left Sam’s hand. Here are their results: Trial Distance (m) Time (s) 1 6.74 6.32 2 4.07 4.93 3 4.43 5.14 Mass of car: 174 g Complete the calculations needed to find the force of friction acting on the balloon car. Be sure to show all of your work and include a free body diagram. 2. Describe an experiment Mr. Braeckman and Sam could perform to determine the energy stored in their balloon car before the car is released. In this case, they would fill the balloon with air and the car is never pushed. Be specific: mention the measurements you would take and how you would use them. If it helps, include an LOL diagram.  3. Suppose a ramp has been set up.  It is 78.0 cm long and 19.0 cm high. Based on your answers to #1 and #2 of Part B, CALCULATE THE INITIAL STORED ENERGY needed for the car to make it to the top of the ramp. Explain/show your work (If it helps, include an LOL diagram).  MARKING SCHEME Mark Out of PART A #1: d-t Graph Q’s 6 #2: v-t Graph Q’s 6 #3: Fnet and Wnet 6 #4: Wnet and Power 6 PART B #1: Force of Friction 6 #2: How to find Us 4 #3: Required Us 4 Communication Sig figs, units, clarity, completeness, spelling, grammar 10
