Current Issues in Canada – Power Analysis Assignment

CAN 149

For this assignment you will be tasked with analyzing the exercise of power in a particular current issue in Canada. For this assignment, you will select a current issue in Canada from the list below and analyze who has the power in the particular issue, how are they exercising (using) that power and how does their exercise of power affect other parties involved in the particular issue to gain a deeper understanding of the issue.

What you need to do:

Step 1:

Choose
ONE
of the following Canadian social issues to analyze from the following list of options:

- The riots and arrests that followed Toronto’s G20 summit

- The SNC-Lavalin Affair

- Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

- The recent ban on assault-style firearms that followed the mass shooting in Nova Scotia in the spring of 2020

- The quarantine measures following the coronavirus pandemic (*Although this was a global pandemic,
your assignment should focus on Canada
as this is a “Current issues in Canada class”
)

Step 2:

Find at least
TWO
articles from trusted media sources that deal with the Canadian social issue that you have selected. You may use online news sources as long as they are a trusted source. It is generally a good idea to use sources from: CBC, Global News, The Globe and Mail, Macleans etc.

Make sure that you select articles that offer a full coverage of the Canadian issue that you have chosen. You can certainly use more than two articles if you feel like you need to (just be sure to cite them appropriately) but you need to use at
LEAST two articles for this assignment.

Be sure to read your chosen articles carefully. Make sure you understand your chosen Canadian social issue.

Step 3:

Then, in a written discussion of your creation, summarize the Canadian social issue that you have chosen and analyze the use of power involved in your issue.

How to do that:

First
, summarize the Canadian social issue that you have chosen for your reader.

Questions you should answer in your written discussion
; When did this issue begin? Where? (is this a Canada-wide issue or is it focused on a particular city or province?) Why? (what were the factors that caused this issue to emerge?) Who are the people or groups affected in this issue? How are they affected?

Second
, after you have fully summarized the issue for your reader, you will analyze the use of power in your social issue.

Questions you need to ask yourself (and subsequently answer in your written discussion);

- Who (which person OR group) is exercising power in this situation? What are their values and/or interests in this situation?

- How are they exercising power? (ex. Coercion, inducements, persuasion etc.) How is their exercise of power affecting other groups involved in this social issue? - Which “face of power” is being demonstrated here?

This assignment should be primarily in your own words
. Only quote and/or paraphrase from the article that you have chosen to support your discussion and be sure to include MLA-style in-text citations to give appropriate credit to your source.

MLA citations are a required part of this assignment. Please note that, according to MLA guidelines, citations must come in two places; in-text and a Word Cited page at the end of your work.

Submission Guidelines
