CW1 50% of module mark: maximum 2,000 word individual data analysis report where each student in the class will be given a unique data set on the same topic. Word count excludes tables, charts, figures, references, and appendices (tables, charts and figures should not be used to circumvent word count). Study context, aim and objectives: You are working as a research assistant The centre has received funding from the British Academy to tackle the problem of excessive alcohol consumption by UK undergraduate students. The head of the centre has tasked you to undertake an analysis of data collected from a pilot survey on Bangor undergraduates. You have been employed as someone who has quantitative and general research skills that would be competent in extracting useful insight from such survey data. The overall aim of this pilot phase is to understand students’ response to alcohol warning messages. The specific objectives are: 1. Determine if students’ views and attitudes are differentially influenced by the framing (‘you’ vs. ‘others’) of the warning. 2. Determine factors that would influence how persuasive the warnings are perceived. 3. Determine factors that would directly or indirectly influence students’ a. attitudes towards the LRSOD guidelines. b. Intention to keep to the LRSOD guidelines Assignment tasks: The head of the centre wants you to: 1. provide a profile of the sample obtained and an analysis of the reliability (α) of any measurement scales used in the report, 2. test five (stipulated) research hypotheses (see below), and 3. propose (with literature support) and test one additional hypotheses that would add richness in extracting insight from the data in meeting the overall research aim. The head of the centre has suggested the following report structure: Table of contents (not included in word count) Background/Introduction (150 words) Hypotheses development (500 words) Analysis strategy and justification (150 words) Results and findings (800 words) Discussion, limitations, and recommendation (400 words) References and appendices (not included in word count) Stipulated hypotheses: H1: Compared against pre-exposure to the alcohol warning label, attitude towards LRSOD increases after exposure for (a) females and for (b) males. (You should consider if ‘you’/’others’ framing might make a difference). H2: Willingness to binge drink differ across females and males such that females show less willingness to binge drink. (You should consider if ‘you’/’others’ framing might make a difference). H3: Overall persuasiveness of the warning can be explained by participants’ willingness to read alcohol warning labels, their prior (pre-exposure) attitudes towards LRSOD, and their perceptions regarding believability, vividness, and relevancy of the warning label - (controlling for gender and consumption level as captured in FAST – tip: use hierarchical regression with gender and FAST entered in Block 1). H4: Gender moderates the effect of framing (‘you’ vs. ‘others’) on persuasiveness of the warning. H5: Gender moderates the effect of framing (‘you’ vs. ‘others’) on intention to keep to LRSOD guidelines
