The Kegan theory
The Kegan theory's core concept is that there are five developmental stages into which individuals are classified. Although the stages are mutually
incompatible, individuals are not forced to choose one. They normally progress from one stage to another (Pollock and Harper). Each stage is determined by their capacity to see specific aspects of their lives as subjects instead of being entirely subsumed by them and hence unable to dwell on them. In other regards, my position in Kegan's specified hierarchy is determined by how well I am aware of certain areas of my life and have capitulated to them rather than being driven around by influences I don't understand (Magolda 54).
The five stages of this theory include the impulsive mind, the instrumental mind, the socialised mind, the self-authoring mind, and the self-transforming mind. Stage 1 is concerned with children. Stage 2 used to be confined to teens, but several adults never make it past this point. External influences shape the sense of self as well as an understanding of reality in Stage 3 (Pollock and Harper). In Stage 4, individuals may identify themselves and not be determined by others, their relationships, or their surroundings. In Stage 5, an individual's sense of self is not connected to certain roles or identities but is continually produced by the study of one's roles and identities, which are further refined through interactions with those around them (Rant 100426).
According to this theory, I am at stage 4, i.e., a self-authoring mind. I am at this stage because in this phase of development, adults who understand and know the world rationally analyse the conditions, environment, expectations, and opinions of their social circles and establish an attitude based on their values and opinions (Magolda 54).
