The most important aspect of an employee that concerns a business and the manager is an employee’s job performance. The excellence of an employee is measured through his/her performance. Hence, job perform
ance can be considered the evaluation criteria when it comes to the employees. The efficiency of the job performance of employees in turn affects the way in which an organisation runs. When the job performance is good, the output of an organisation is bound to be good.
Employees’ job performance can, however, be enhanced. This is mainly possible through motivation (Frey and Osterloh, 2001). Motivation can take many forms and is often practiced by managers in several ways using both monetary and non-monetary methods.
Motivation can provide the necessary boost to employees to deliver their best and thus increase their job performance. If employees are met with the right type of motivation they can increase their output and improve a business. Motivation can be very conducive to a business. However, at the same time, it can also be an unnecessary expense. This can happen if the resources spent on motivation do not motivate employees. In such cases, motivation can become a cost with no benefit. In addition, unequal motivation within the organisation can lead to discord within employees and break down team spirit. So in order to use motivation in the right way, it is important to strike the correct balance between motivation and resources spent on motivation to get the most desired output.
There is a direct link between the motivation of employees and improvement in their job performance (Salanova, Agut and Peiró, 2005). That is why, it is important for managers to use motivation as a tool to enhance the job performance of employees. Motivation increases the quality of work performance of employees. When employees are motivated towards the goals of the organisation they increase their efforts and work hard towards achieving them. This way, when employees are giving in their 100 per cent they accomplish more and the quality of their work is enhanced significantly.
Motivation also develops a sense of belonging in the employees. When properly motivated the employees view company’s goals as their own. Hence they develop a sense of belonging and view the work as their own, leading to better results and improvement in job performance.
It also leads to better utilisation of resources as sufficiently motivated employees tend to utilise their own talents and abilities to the maximum and employ the organisation’s resources in the most efficient manner. This reduces wastage and decreases cost incurred by the organisation. It leads to job satisfaction which in turn leads to more job motivation (Mak and Sockel, 2001).
Motivation enhances group work as well. When all the employees are adequately motivated, they function efficiently as a team towards the organisation’s goals. Having shared goals improves communication within the organisation and leads to ease in addressing problems and disagreements and reduces tension and rivalry...
