Description ; you will teach the audience about your culture and what this culture means to you. This is your story. If you are unsure where to begin start with thinking about what culture means to you. A culture can be defined in many ways. It can be the group of friends you have known for years; it can be the classmates that you have classes with, it can be your fraternity, your sorority, a sports team, music, it can be the family you grew up with, family dinners, holidays, your traditions, religion or it could be something important in your life that means something to you, etc. Really think about how your culture has shaped you into the person you are today. INTRODUCTION: Attention Getter: When was the first time your parents let you venture out on your own? Were they constantly texting and calling you? Would they interrogate you about why you were ten minutes late to them picking you up? For me personally, the first time my friends and I went to the movie by ourselves in the 6th grade, my mom sat in the parking lot to make sure we didn’t pull any funny business. Credibility Statement: From a young age my parents wanted me to become an independent person. Through this I became responsible for my life and the choices I made. This made me want to do better and even more dedicated to important things in my life. I was not being pushed or forced to do something I did not want to do. It was my choice! II. For every success I had in my life, I also had some failures A. When I was a freshman in High School, I tried out for the lacrosse team. I had just picked up a stick only a month prior. Of course, to my surprise, I did not make the team. My parents comforted me as I fought back tears, but they also told me that just because I didn’t make it this year doesn’t mean I couldn't next year. Through my parent's encouragement, I practiced and made the team the following year. B. My parents always rewarded me for my successes 1. My parents are my biggest fans. They were just as proud of me when I made my own Jackson Pollock macaroni art, as they were when I earned my Eagle Scout. CONCLUSION: Summary Statement: Through the independence, my parents gave me as a kid I became the young man that stands in front of you today. Audience Response Statement: Through this speech, I hope to encourage you to think about what independence means to you. If you are a parent with kids who are starting to mature, think about giving them bits of independence. For those of you who still struggle with not feeling independent, think of ways you can start to become more independent. WOW Statement: People often say that college is where you truly become independent, but for me, I have known independence for a long time.
