Design Study 1: Surface Ship HVAC System You are working for a shipbuilding company in the machinery systems design group. The company has just received an inquiry about the preliminary design for a small offshore patrol vessel which is to operate around Australian waters (Tasmania to Darwin). You have been given the task of producing the preliminary machinery design for the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system for this offshore patrol vessel. The client has provided some initial general requirements for the vessel. Some of this information may be superfluous to the current task, and other information may be incomplete and you will need to make and justify the assumptions made. Similar vessels may already in service in many countries around the world and an office colleague has also pointed that Austal Ships in Western Australia have built similar vessels. Known information is as follows: Overall length to be 28 m Beam 6.5m Displacement 75.0 tonnes Maximum speed 25 knots Cruising speed over 20 knots Range 1000 nautical miles at 10 knots Endurance 21 days. Crew 11 (3 officers + 8 sailors For this design study, you are required to undertake a preliminary design study into an air conditioning system for the accommodation spaces and submit a formal report detailing your proposed design. The design air conditioning target is to achieve an accommodation space temperature of 27 oC and relative humidity of 50% during summer and 22 oC air temperature for winter operating conditions around Australian coastal waters. Note no winter humidity is specified. Scope of the work is to include system design sketches identifying main equipment, air temperatures, humidity, air flow distribution paths, air flow rates, cooling and heating loads, suitable fans, coolers and heaters together with an estimation of the total electrical load. As part of your design, you are also required to provide either a Fault Tree Analysis where the top event is no air conditioning available or a Failure Mode and Effect Analysis for the system. Remember, this is a preliminary design for a concept vessel, so you will need to create data based on typical designs of similar vessels as well as on your own experience and judgment.
