Designing a solution for Small Office Home Office (SOHO) network

Microsoft Word - CSE1SIXAss2Op1v05 Scenario Designing a solution for Small Office Home Office (SOHO) network Higgins and Hilton tax accountants have recently opened a new office. They are committed to providing taxation and financial planning services to both individuals and small business owners. Currently they have the following staff members:  Four (4) tax accountants (Full Time)  Two (2) junior accountants (Full Time)  Two (2) reception staff (Full Time) Two (2) financial advisors (Part Time – Two days/week) The area for the new office is approximately 250 sqm. The floorplan is shown in Figure 1 below. The office consists of  One reception desk  A dedicated waiting area for clients  One small meeting room  One staff room (with kitchen)  Eight consultation rooms  One boardroom  One bathroom area The boardroom has walls made of solid clay brick for the purposes of sound dampening. All other rooms on the entire floor are divided from each other by plasterboard sheets. The office is fully furnished but lacks computers, networking devices and cabling. Figure 1 Assessment 2 Networking Report Information System Infrastructure The following IT equipment has been purchased:  Eight (8) desktop computers of the same type (for the full-time employees). Table 1 shows their sample specifications.  Two (2) laptops of the same type (for the part-time employees). Work your way through each of the tasks below to design and deploy the network When responding to a task make sure you refer to the assessment marking criteria for that task. The assessment marking criteria are located at the end of this document. Task 1 To interconnect the desktop computers, you have decided to use a wired network. What is the main transmission media that you would use for this? Ensure that you explain why you have selected specific media in terms of:  Speed  Length  Ease of installation  Compatibility with intermediary devices Task 2 The part-time employees using laptops should be able to access the network using a wireless connection. What devices will you need to extend the wired network to support a wireless access point to the network taking maximum connection speed into consideration. Make sure you justify your answer. Note: When answering Task 2, please refer to assessment marking criteria for Task 2. Task 3 In addition to the workstations and server, the multifunctional printer needs to be connected to the network. Would you connect it using wired media or the wireless medium set up as part of Task 2? Justify your answer. Recommend a make and model of multifunctional printer that meets customer requirements as outlined in the assessment scenario. Task 4 As part of the network setup you need to assign suitable static IP version 4 addresses to the devices (with subnet mask) .You have decided to go with the class C private IP address range 192.168.100.0/24 (except where it is clearly indicated otherwise). Copy the table below (Table 3) and fill out the incomplete addresses in column 3 to make suitable addresses. Device IP address IP Address with Subnet Mask Desktop_1 1st usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Desktop_2 2nd usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Desktop_3 4th usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Desktop_4 5th usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Desktop_5 7th usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Desktop_6 8th usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Desktop_7 10th usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Desktop_8 11th usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Laptop_1 14th usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Laptop_2 15th usable IP address 192.168.100. ? 255.255.255. ? Printer 192.168.200.100/24 192.168.200.100 255.255.255.0 Table 3 Task 5 Implement the network topology using Packet Tracer. Use the partial design in Figure 2 below to assist you. The following should be taken into consideration when implementing the topology:  All devices (laptops, desktops & printer) have their IP addresses and subnet mask configured, (as per your answer in Task 4)  Select the appropriate media in Packet Tracer and label the connections between the nodes considering your answers in Tasks 1, 2 and 3.  Use the switch 2960 with 24 ports and two gigabit uplink ports to interconnect the desktops.  A standard wireless access-point is added and configured with no security. This wireless access-point should be then connected to the switch via a suitable wired media.  The printer is to be configured and connected Figure 2 Task 6 Test the network using a suitable network utility and verify that all desktops and laptops can communicate with one another. Provide screenshots to verify that you have used suitable tools for this task. The command line utility should only be used to test connectivity. Task 7 Configure the most secure protocol (available in packet tracer) to authenticate the part-time employees. Users with wireless devices should be able to easily determine that they are connecting to the office network Justify your responses and provide screen shots. Task 8 Assume that Desktop_5 is a Linux box. You have run common command line tools and receive the following output (Figure 3). Figure 3 Use Figure 3 above to answer the following questions: 1. What is the IP version 4 address of this machine? 2. What is the IP version 6 address of this machine? 3. What is the MAC address of this machine? 4. What is the default gateway? 5. Does this machine appear to have internet connectivity? Explain Task 9 Assume that the network has been physically set up as you have demonstrated in your Packet Tracer file (created in Task 5). Users have complained that none of them can print. Using the Packet Tracer file troubleshoot this issue and identify what its cause might be. Assume that the printer is a mechanically functional printer and has no physical defects. Identify what the problem may be and give an explanation to its cause and how it might be resolved. Your response should be based on Task 4. Include a screenshot in your response. Note The IP address 8.8.8.8 is Google’s DNS server. Task 10 ‘Higgins and Hilton’ need to store an image of all workstations in one location. Backups need to run each night. 2 copies of the backups need to be maintained at the Higgins and Hilton premises, and another copy will be stored on the cloud. You have decided to install NAS (Network Attached Storage) as a solution. In relation to this respond to all of the following points  How many hard drives would you install in NAS and what RAID level would you use and why? Provide a cost-effective solution for the business (performance is not important).  What media would you use to connect NAS to the network and how would you connect it?  For demonstration purposes include a computer or a server in packet tracer, label it as NAS and assign the 16th usable IP address to NAS. You must provide a relevant screenshot. Submitting your assessment When you have completed all the tasks, submit the assessment on the LP. You should submit the following:  Submit your Cisco Packet Tracer based project, named xxx_assessment2.pkt (where xxx is your student number).  Submit your answers to the relevant tasks in a single Word document named xxx_assessment2.docx (where xxx is your student number) with clearly labelled headings for each task. Assessment 2 - Marking Criteria Requirement Criteria Points Technical Aspects Technical information in relation to the following  Selection of transmission media, connectors, adaptors (3)  Selection of device to support wireless access (1)  Connection method of printer (1) /5 Conceptual Detail and Explanations Explanations of the following are correct:  IP Versions of machine (1)  MAC addresses of machine (1)  Default Gateway of machine (1)  Ping Command Error (1)
