Developing your leadership is a combination of knowing, being and doing. All three parts are important in the equation. No matter, how much you know, if you don't practice and reflect, it won't develop you. You cannot reflect without putting yourself there. And only you can decide to practice!
This assignment is a combination of conceptual thinking and practical activity. You are supposed toanalyseone aspect/ dimension in a leadership theory (knowing/thinking),practiceit (doing/acting) andreflectyour experience (being/feeling). The final report is quite short and to the point.
Therefore, you narrow your topic down:Chooseone theory of leadershipfrom the recommended chapters of your course book. A title of the theory is enough, you do not have to explain it. Yet, in that theory, chooseone aspect/dimension of the theoryand discuss what that means as practical behavior/skills/competencies. So you write how a competent personwould behave when they apply this aspect of the theory in their practice and how others would perceive their competence in their actions.
Choose the kind of aspect that you are able to reflect in your own practice, since the practical part of this assignment is to try it out and reflect during your work week (or another context). Yet, notice that leadership moments are quite short moments, so the context and people involved does not have to be anything grand. Furthermore, you don’t have to be an appointed leader, but you might find appropriate context e.g. from working in a group or with a client as well.
In describing the aspect/dimension of the theory, use the course book and possibly research literature (peer-reviewed articles are recommended).
To help your practice, consider the following questions/pointsbeforepractising:
- What is the skill that you intent to reflect in your practice next week?
- What kind of situations are good to practice and reflect that particular skill?
- What could be a small change in your behavior/actions that would make a difference towards developing that chosen behavior/skill.
- Prepare and orientate for the week: Decide topractice that during a weekin your social encounters. While you do it, reflect.
To help your reflections, consider the following questions/pointsafterpractising. (You do not have to address all of them in your report, consider what insights are most relevant and most valuable.)
- What happened?
- How did it affect to you?
- What kind of emotions you recognized in you?
- How can you use that "material" (data collected) in your learning?
- How did that conscious learning experience feel?
- What would you do differently based on what you learned?
- What were you happy with? How could you strenghten that in the future?
- What else did you learn about yourself?
- Did you learn what you intended to learn?
Length of the essay is maximum 500 words with the bibliography. As always in this course, write first in Word and copy/paste into the editor here.
