Probation and parole are two alternatives to jail in which the offender's behaviour is supervise
d according to the law. Probation is a court-imposed sentence in which the criminal offender is not imprisoned but is permitted to stay in the community on the promise of good behaviour, subject to the monitoring of the probation officer. Parole, also known as supervised release, is when an offender is freed from jail, either temporarily or permanently, before the conclusion of his or her sentence, on the condition that he or she behaves well.
Advantages of Probation and Parole
Lower costs vs. imprisonment
Probation and parole provides different benefits and opportunities. While analyzing the cost aspects related to probation and parole we can understand that many people believe that probation is a better option than prison. Probation has numerous notable advantages, including the fact that it maintains people in the community and is less expensive than jail. With efforts to reduce mass incarceration, it may make more sense to place more people on probation rather than incarcerate them at first. On other side parole helps for minimising prison overpopulation by providing criminals who are deemed unlikely to harm others with the advantage of a supervised existence in society (Renn et al 2021). Parole assists the government in attempting to reduce the enormous expenses of maintaining large prison populations while keeping the general public safe.
