Introduction
A foreign force seizes control of a region, its
resources, and its population through the process of colonization. The ongoing struggles of several indigenous communities across the world are evidence of the significant and long-lasting effects of colonialism on indigenous populations. This article will examine how colonization affected the Maori people of Aotearoa, New Zealand, a particular indigenous community. Before European settlers arrived in New Zealand, the Maori people had been living there for more than a thousand years. The invaders disturbed and destroyed their way of life, culture, economy, religion, and worldviews. The effects of colonialism on the Maori people have been felt to this day, and this article will discuss those effects as well as various kinds of resistance and opposing viewpoints that have evolved among the colonized population.
Profile of the colonised population
The original residents of Aotearoa, New Zealand, are the Maori people. They had a thriving, diversified culture before colonialism, with a focus on the family and the community. Maori society placed a high value on religion, which included a complicated system of ancestor worship and gods. The natural environment played a significant role in Maori worldviews and methods of knowing, and their perspective of the world was strongly related to their relationship with the land. They possessed a strong oral tradition that had been handed down through the years. This legacy comprised songs, genealogies, and stories that helped to maintain their history and way of life (Kitching et al., 2020). Additionally, they had a sophisticated artistic tradition that represented their spiritual convictions and sense of cultural identity via woodcarving, weaving, and tattooing. Additionally, the Maori people were organized socially and politically in a hierarchical manner by tribes and chiefs. The colonists undermined and obliterated this intricate system of beliefs and rituals.
Impacts of colonisation
The Maori population suffered greatly once European colonizers arrived in the late 18th century. Diseases brought by the colonizers caused a population decline, while the development of new technology and weaponry made it simpler for the colonizers to conquer the country and its resources. The Maori people were compelled to cede their land, and many of them were made to labor on farms or in industries run by Europeans. Many Maori people were forced to rely on products and services from Europe as a result, which had a significant impact on their economy and way of life. Because of colonization, the...
