DISCUSSION BOARD 4 (250 WORDS)

Based on your past experiences or researchand the knowledge gained during your coursework, consider the following question, and post a substantive initial post:

  • How can technology reduce errors in medical coding while helping organizations remain compliant with billing and reimbursement guidelines?

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT 4 (1, 250 words)

Assignment Description

You work at a small community-based hospital as a manager in the quality assurance department. One function of your job is to analyze internal data such as medical records, patient surveys, and incident reports to track trends and help improve patient care delivery. Your supervisor just came back from a seminar on quality benchmarking and has asked about your thoughts on analyzing secondary data from the health care industry as a way to benchmark and measure the organization's quality performance against its peers. You have been asked to prepare a report on the use of both secondary data and internal data as way to improve quality in your organization. Complete the following:

  • Write a paper comparing and contrasting the collection of secondary data and their uses versus the analysis of current health care records and internal data such as incident reports and patient surveys.

  • Explain how health care organizations use secondary data as a comparison to internal data.

  • Assess the validity and reliability of primary and secondary data in conducting health care research.

Discussion Post
Technology could play major
role in reducing as well as preventing errors in medical coding. It would be essential to consider that coding errors are difficult to identify while billing; however, the inculcation of technology such as the use of electronic health record (EHR) could help the independent physicians to check for errors especially before the bill goes out. According to Wills (2014), technology such as the use of EHR, allows the prevention of errors in patient information contained in the insurance claims. Further, coding rules might change every now and then therefore, it is essential to stay updated on coding rules. Electronic softwares come with pre-installed coding rules as well as continuous updates occur automatically, which could then help to prevent coding errors.
Billing process includes the appropriate confirmation code electronic health record (EHR) and then a GT modifier might be used to indicate if the service was done via telemedicine. Verification before submitting nay claim is essential because of the fraudulent information, which might be submitted by the patients and new softwares can now be used to reduce diagnostic and administrative errors. Cheng and Phillips (2014) mentioned that other than EHR, CPOE, RFID and CDSS are considered as technologies that are more effective. CPOE integration with CDSS allows a significant reduction in medical as well as medication and billing errors. Moreover, these softwares can also make the coding process much faster than conventional billing methods and every document can then be rapidly analyzed. It could also be considered that it could also be considered that the accuracy of data collected based upon the operation and service delivery provided by healthcare organizations.
Introduction
Data in every industry plays role with respect to the determination of its success or failure and healthcare is no exception. It would be essential to consider that data in healthcare could be primary as well as secondary depending upon the mode of data collection. Data collected through direct surveys, medical records of the organization, incident reports and much more contribute to primary data while the data collected from other published sources such as research articles, newspapers, journals and much more is secondary data. Where primary data reflects the organization’s data, secondary data is required to analyze and present the comparison on industry level. Therefore, both primary and secondary data is required in healthcare.
Use of Primary and Secondary Data in Healthcare Organizations
Data could be considered as a primary source of healthcare industry because it drives evidence-based health and medical (H&M) research. Primary as well as secondary data is the categorization of data and it is majorly based upon the process of data collection. Traditional mode of data collection for clinical trials through surveys, patient’s feedbacks and much more is considered as primary data or primary research data because this data has never been collected before from the targeted population.
Further, considering the current digital health environment, administrative health data is collected and aggregated in electronic form, which could then be used by the stakeholders in healthcare organizations (Bierer, Crosas & Pierce, 2017). Irrespective of the type of data, there are some common rationales for collection of administrative health data in an organization and these include:
· To manage the healthcare services of individual consumers and to ensure continuity of care
· Further, to streamline the healthcare service delivery process at all possible levels
· To manage as well as administer healthcare and hospital service delivery
· To identify the service quality being provided at the organization
· Moreover, to ensure...
