Introduction
Not every individual may have the similar potential or ability to utilize the resources like others. This is especially true in cases where the employees or workers might be suffering from a health issue and as a result, the traditional working policies may not work with them. Therefore, it becomes essential to understand the needs of these individuals in order to allow them to work in a similar manner. Problem solving will allow identifying the possible solutions for the issue while decision-making is a part of problem solving. Therefore, this report will focus upon such problem solving and decision making skills, which may be required to address the learning needs of individuals with health issues.
Healthcare Issue Indicating Learning Needs
Learning needs of a healthy individual will always be different from the individual suffering from some health issue. Therefore, before defining or planning any objectives or action plan to address learning needs, it would be essential clearly to imbibe the learning needs. ‘Autism’ also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is very common health issue. This is majorly because autism is an umbrella term used to refer to a broad range of conditions, which could be characterized by repetitive behaviors, challenges with social skills, flat speech or communication issues, presence of obsessive interests, abnormal body posture or face impressions and much more (Kleberg et al., 2017).
Justifying Autism as a Problem and its Significance
It would be essential to consider that individuals suffering from autism cannot be distinguished from normal individuals based upon their looks; however, their behavior, mode of communication, learning and thinking abilities may segregate them from normal individuals. It would be essential to consider that the learning and problem solving abilities of autism patients can vary from gifted to challenge severally. Therefore, considering the healthcare settings, initially it would be distinguish to separate individuals with autism unless they reflect the characteristic behavior. Likewise, these individuals may not be able to fit with the normal individuals or may not be able to take instructions effectively compared to normal individuals. Accordingly, this may lead to accident or harm to patient or other members at the healthcare settings.
The rationales presented above indicates that reformed objectives as well as new learning practices would be required as an inclusion with the already existing, in order to address the needs of workers suffering from autism. van der Plas, Dupuis, Arnold, Crosbie and Schachar (2016) suggested that organizational culture relies highly upon social and communication skills and it can be hard for the workers with autism to break through without any support. Likewise, inclusion of change would be difficult for such individuals because they may not be able to adapt to that change; therefore, learning objectives emerges as a major necessity.
Learning Objectives
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder; therefore, in most of the cases individuals possess this from their childhood. In other words, an adult with autism would have been suffering from it since childhood; therefore, learning objectives for different individuals may vary. However, certain common characteristics or behaviors can be imbibed in order to plan for the learning objectives. The major learning objectives that could be focused upon are—
· To establish effective and transparent communication
· To be successful in social skills
· To exhibit professional behavior at workplace
· To implement workplace therapy
Depending upon the where the individuals may be lagging or struggle to cope-up with the normal individuals will be the potential areas for implication of these objectives. Effective and transparent communication would be the first and prioritized learning objective. This is majorly because of the fact that individuals suffering from Autism ay often take things seriously or in an offensive aspect.
In other words, they may develop their personal inference without even considering the actual sense of the talk. Therefore, non-verbal communication and gestures could be a major inclusion to avoid any confusion. Likewise, facial expressions could also help to justify the actual meaning of verbal communication (National Autistic Society, 2020).
Social skills may include developing friendship with fellow workers, learning from the working and function of other individuals, structured and unstructured playtime and much more. Social skills are a combination of speech, behavior as well as physical therapy. Therefore, at workplace settings social skills would be essential while interacting with patients as well as fellow workers.
Repetitive behavior, body movements, compulsive obsession with certain action can be recognizable symptoms. Therefore, it would be essential to respect the personal boundaries of such individuals. Eye contact while talking can be a difficult gesture from them and can be avoided. Inclusion of workplace therapy can also be a potential...
