Outline of Benner’s Theory
    The Benner theory of Nursing was given by Dr. Patricia Benner in 1982 which is derived from Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition. This theory introduced the Novice to Expert model. As mentioned by Elhami, Ban, Mousaviasl, and Zahedi (2018), this model discusses gaining of new skills and knowledge from novice stage to expert stage. Benner model provides the stands on how a nurse can develop knowledge, clinical competence, skills, and clinical comprehension of patient care using theoretical training and experimental learning from novice to expert stage.
As suggested by Munro (2019), development from novice to expert position is affected by time invested in working in the profession, and clinical experience. Benner’s theory of nursing suggested that nurses develops the position of expert using the skills and understand their care given to the patient over the period using proper education and multitude of experiences. This theory does not provide information about how to become nurse but give guidance on acquiring knowledge in the nursing field. It stated that a nurse can acquire knowledge and skills without learning about it. This model emphasizes on learning through experimental and situation based and nursing student needs to passed through the five phases to reached the expert position. It must be noted that nursing is dependent on the improved practice which are gained through experience and science. Dr. Benner developed the theory based on the skills of involvement of the nurses when they deal with patients and their families and handle different situations.
Five stages of clinical competence
    The five stages of clinical competence include novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert. As mentioned by Williams, and Song (2016), the first stage is novice stage in which nursing student will be in their first year of clinical education, their behavior in the clinical setting is very flexible and limited. It has been seen that nurses in the novice stage have very limited skills to predict the condition of the patient in the specific situation. The general signs and symptoms can be recognized by the nurses such as change in the mental status. The second stage is advanced beginner in which nurses which are newly graduated and pursue their first jobs are included. In this stage, nurses have experience in recognizing recurrent and important component of a situation. They have knowledge but lack in-depth experience. The third stage is competent in which nurses have some proficiency at their work and developed advance planning and organizational skills. These nurses lack flexibility and speed of proficient nurses. They can recognize the nature and patterns of the clinical situation better and faster the advanced beginner.
