There are many text editors that you can choose in Linux to use - both GUI and CLI-based. VI and VIM are the oldest known command-line text editors. There are also nano, edit, and others.

To provide insight into the quality of software that is available, you will research high-quality, free Linux text editors. This information will be of interest to anyone who wishes to have more control over managing their files.

As a group, complete the following:

  • Research different Linux text editors (at least two from CLI and two from GUI).

  • Compare and contrast the different editors.

  • Document your findings for your peers.

  • Choose one text editor to research further (or your instructor will assign each group an editor).

  • Develop a tutorial in Powerpoint on how to use the editor. You will present this tutorial in the next session.

Next session:

Each group will present its findings and tutorial. As each group presents, the class should discuss the following:

  • How do your findings of Linux text editors differ from your classmates?

  • Provide feedback to your classmates on your similarities and differences to their research.

  • Provide feedback on their tutorial of their text editor of their choice. What questions did you have on the text editor? What suggestions do you have on how they can improve their tutorial?

Each student should submit what their group prepared for this assignment.
