    THIRD WORLD AND POLLUTION

Ethical implications of businesses polluting in a third world country
The term third world country is a term used to refer to countries that are poor
and underdeveloped. In many third world countries a standard check on pollution and
other environmental problems does not exist, the reason behind low standard or no
restriction on pollution creation by a business firm is opportunity cost of creating a
environment regulation, the next best alternative to a clean and safe environment is
satisfying the basic needs of its population and always the one who receives a
    preference is the latter.
Often the result of choice between two most desirable alternatives i.e. clean
environment and the basic needs of population, allow rich business firms of western
country to dump wastes in developing countries where there is little or no environmental
regulation and sometime governments collects considerable fees for accepting their
garbage. In 1991, World Watch magazine reported that Western companies dumped more
than 24 million tons (22 million metric tons) of hazardous waste in Africa alone during
1988. Also, businesses set up plants in third world countries mentioning the same will
generate a good level of employment. These business firms pollute the air of these
countries by dumping the toxic material produced during production, there is zero
incentive to reduce the waste due to absence of effective environment law like the one
present in home country. For example, IBM, General Motors, and Sony have established
    manufacturing plants in Mexico.
Country in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa are the largest victims
of toxic chemicals dumped by large firms of Western Countries. The consequences of
businesses polluting the third world country are air pollution, soil pollution, health risks,
water pollution, deforestation, desertification, poverty, lack of drinking water etc. Though
every competitive business has some moral obligation, it is good that they produced
output with optimal technology at fair and competitive prices without creating any dead
weight loss and behave competitively but their responsibilities are not restricted to their
marginal benefits driven social benefits should also be taken into consideration the
hazardous chemicals which looks to death in Western Countries should not be find an
acceptable market in the Third World Countries just because government of these country
cannot restrict the usage of these chemicals considering it would be too costly to citizens
    trying to make a living.
Why a business operates in a third world country and disregards any standards of
    pollution control
    THIRD WORLD AND POLLUTION

The incentive to operate a business in third world country comes with lack of
restriction on pollution. In third world countries the business firm can go on for a long
period of production generating corrosive chemical...
