Students are encouraged to engage with a Tourism and Hospitality business identified in the course or draw upon their own industry experience to uncover a key strategic management issue for a business in the Tourism and Hospitality industry. Some key areas of strategic management in the Tourism and Hospitality industry that may be of interest could include the following; competition, resources, competitive advantage, business level strategy, corporate level strategy, organisation structure and controls, globalisation, entrepreneurship, leadership and sustainability. Marriott International based in America is a multinational and d
iversified form of hospitality company. Marriott International undertakes the management as well as franchises wide ranging portfolio comprising hotels as well as affiliated lodging facilities. The strategic issue of environmental sustainability hazards from mass tourism is quite high. Mass tourism, induced by globalization, is both enabled by this company, and then eventually faces challenges as well for long-term survival. Due to irresponsible use and rampages of mass tourism, overall quality concerning the specific destination shall decline, and the same shall gradually lose its popularity amongst tourists. They shall then start visiting other countries / regions that will offer higher quality tourist attractions. Globalization in essence represents a process that shall enable a continued tightening of networks and ties which shall cut across the political boundaries of nations and shall connect with communities by way of singular, interdependently whole, shrinking world wherein the local differences shall be eroded as well as subsumed to a steady extent within massive social order at the global scale (Mowforth & Munt, 2015; Higgins-Desbiolles et al., 2019; Song et al., 2018). The same can be noted to be facilitated on account of the rapid movements concerning people, money, information, and even ideas across the globe. The three key issues of strategic significance caused by globalization in the tourism & hospitality industry include the following – [i] commodification as well as the trivialization pertaining to local cultures in terms of everything taking for practical / commercial aspects primarily focussed on money alone, [ii] homogenization where all cities / regions across the globe start to look same and the same is a problem as experiencing diversity with respect to architecture, food, cultures, languages, etc. represents key reason for travelling, and [iii] mass tourism of various forms which is enabled on account of cheaper travel costs and globalized networks is causing havoc on environment and its sustainability (Mowforth & Munt, 2015; Higgins-Desbiolles et al., 2019; Song et al., 2018).
