Introduction
    The role of teaching and assessment in young children’s learning and development has recently gained ample importance. Teaching and assessment in the early childhood has turned out to be an important milestone in the future growth and development of young children. This has been playing a role of a supporting element in the growth and development of young children. Teaching and assessment not only helps to impart knowledge to young children but have also been acting as factors of motivation for children. Through this essay an effort has been made to discuss the role of teaching and assessment in learning and development of young children. The essay will also shed some light on the pedagogical approaches to teaching and assessment such as sociocultural and developmental approaches. A critical analysis of the contemporary teaching and assessment approaches will also be presented here along with advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Role of Teaching and Assessment in Learning
    There is no doubt about the fact that teaching plays a unique and essential role in the learning process of the young children as it helps to shape the opinions and ideas of youngsters towards the society. Teaching plays a crucial role as it helps the young learners gain ample knowledge about different walks of life. Growth and well-being of the children be it in physical, emotional or in social terms depends on the way they have been taught in their early childhood (Deneen et al., 2019). Assessment also has a unique role to play in the learning of young children as it helps the children to identify their areas of interests and is essential for the evaluation of the educational goals and standards.
    To ensure that appropriate knowledge is being imparted to the students with different learning capacities, selection of appropriate teaching strategies is a must. Selecting the appropriate teaching strategies helps to ensure that students will be able to retain the knowledge, which is being imparted to them. For instance, bite sized learning and active participation can help slow learners learn with greater efficiency. Additionally, teaching strategies like reinforcing active listening and offering group presentations can help the young children improve their communication skills. Therefore, to ensure that the intended purpose of teaching is met, teaching strategies must be chosen wisely (Kalyani & Rajasekaran, 2018).
    Apart from teaching strategies, assessment tools also play a crucial role in the learning and development of young children. Choosing appropriate assessment tools not only helps the teachers to know the learning progress of the children but also helps the children reflect upon their performance and determine the scope of improvement as well as opportunity (Carless, 2017). Verbal or written tests, forms or rubrics can help to know whether a particular learning outcome has been achieved or not. However, tools must be decided depending on the type of assessment to ensure appropriate outcomes.
    Teaching and assessment also plays a critical role, when it comes to the holistic development of young children. Effective and efficient teaching and assessment processes ensure that the children have ample knowledge about the society and the duties they have towards the society. It also helps children to gain ample knowledge about different subject matters focusing on different walks of life.
