Emotion and motivation are of critical importance in psychology. The assigned readings for Week 4 cover these topics. In some cultures, the free expression of emotions, such as public examples of affection, is allowed and even encouraged. In cross-cultural counseling, the counselor often finds that the patient from another culture is having difficulty becoming enculturated. Often, the difficulty concerns male-female relations, such as exhibiting emotions or behaviors such as dating. In this conference, I ask you to do the following.
a. Select a collectivist culture. What does that culture consider "taboo" in male-female relations? Be specific.
b. How and why might that be a problem for enculturation of an immigrant teenager or young adult from that culture into an individualistic culture, like the USA?
