Essay type: literary analysis of a short story. Your analysis will support a thesis statement about either Daniel Orozco's "Orientation" or Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find."

Length:approximately 500-800 words

  • Your essay should:

  • be literature-based (as opposed to being primarily biographical or historical in its focus)

  • center on an interpretive thesis about a theme that is sufficiently narrowed to fit the scope of the assignment

  • include only limited summary and/or exposition

  • address literary elements as related to discussion of the theme

  • conform to MLA style and format (meaning that in addition to general formatting [double spacing, etc.], it must include in-text citations and a works cited page).

Organization:the organization of the essay should include: 1. an introduction that clearly articulates the focus of your essay; 2. body paragraphs that present key ideas in support of your main idea and support those key ideas with specific reference to passages or lines from the short story; and 3. a conclusion that goes beyond restating your thesis to emphasize/explain the significance of your analysis or suggest other possible directions for inquiry.

Source material:Your essay will focus on presenting your ideas, with the short story itself serving as your primary source. This assignment does not call for outside research or connections to your personal experience. You may make reference to your personal experience, so long as it does not take away from the main focus of your essay: literary analysis.
