Exercise Delivery (HLTH 2027) Assessment 3: Written report (weighting 30%) The aim of this document is to provide you with the information and marking guidelines essential to achieving the very best marks possible for your written report. If you have any questions that are not addressed by this document and that are not of a personal nature, please post them to the course forum. If you have a question it is extremely likely its answer will assist numerous people and questions posted to the forum will be answered preferentially over those sent via email… so please post! Graduate skills developed and assessed within this assignment Evaluation of client exercise load and when/how best to progressively overload are essential components to good exercise delivery. It is also of great importance that strategy for progression is based on data obtained, client goals/requirements and peer reviewed literature. This assessment piece requires you to review the exercise program your client has been adhering to for the past six weeks (please see ‘Exercise Delivery Written Report Program Data’ on the LearnOnline page), justify this program, evaluate its effectuality (or potential lack thereof) and implement relevant changes for the next two weeks of training (to be implemented by your colleague), in addition to the creation of an additional component of the clients training to be conducted by her whole team SCENARIO INFORMATION: Please see below relevant client information You are the trainer of a 35 year old female recreational ice hockey player, and have been training the client for over 2 years. Her body mass is 61.2 kg. Her height is 1.72 m. She is free of injury, aerobically fit (VO2max 45 ml.kg.min-1) and reports no risk factors on the ESSA pre-participation screening system. Her current training program is designed to increase lower body power, whole body strength, and core strength and endurance. Strength was assessed for various important exercises in the clients exercise program at the beginning of the last six-week training block, and can be found within her training program summary. Her game schedule consists of one game per week, typically on a Sunday evening, and she has one on ice training session per week, normally on a Wednesday night. You are leaving for a 6-week holiday and are handing over the supervision of the resistance training component of her training to another trainer, who is less experienced than you. Thus, you have decided to conduct a review of her training performance over the last 6 weeks and make recommendations for changes (as necessary) to the incoming trainer in a written document, as you are unable to meet them face to face prior to your departure. ‘Exercise Delivery Written Report Program Data’ abbreviations DBDumbbell MBMedicine Ball mmetres Sseconds BWbodyweight BW+xbodyweight + x kg additional mass A1, A2 etc. These notes before the prescribed exercise indicate the sequence of exercise performance. All exercises are performed in numerical sequence (1, 2, 3 etc.). Exercises grouped by letter code are executed back to back without rest (e.g. A1-A2-A3 are all done back to back). Rest occurs between clusters of exercises. If multiple sets are indicated, these are defined similarly (e.g. 3 sets would be A1-A2-A3, rest, A1-A2-A3, rest, A1-A2-A3, rest, begin the exercises noted as B [B1-B2]). Report Questions and Layout ALL of the below sections MUST be addressed Part 1: three sections, totalling 1500 words MAXIMUM a. Provide a review of the current exercise program (i.e. Are the current exercises, exercise order, rest periods, etc. relevant to achieving the desired outcomes for this client? Why/why not?). (Suggested 500 word maximum) b. Provide a brief evaluation of the effectuality of the program over the past 6 weeks (i.e. Present clearly the effect [positive or negative] that the program has had on client performance). (Suggested 500 word maximum) c. Based on data presented in section two, what changes would you implement in this clients program for the next two weeks and why? (suggested 500 word maximum) Part 2: one section, totalling 500 words MAXIMUM a. The head coach of the ice hockey team was so impressed with the clients improvement following your new program that they want you to develop a ‘conditioning program’ that for the entire team. To quote the coach, she wants “you know, a fitness workout that will increase their ability to skate harder for longer on the ice”, which can be incorporated into the teams weekly training session and has a duration of between 15 and 25 minutes. The coach wants this to be the main conditioning within the training sessions, so it is important it is effective in improving the teams ‘fitness’. Use your knowledge of aerobic/anaerobic training to design a workout that will meet the coaches brief. Please see marking criteria (end of document) for further information, requirements and mark distribution. Report presentation This report should be no longer than 2000 words, with 1500 words in Part 1 and 500 in Part 2. The length of each report section in Part 1 is meant as a guide, as long as you do not exceed 1500 words in total you can weight your report however you see fit. Text beyond the 1500 work point for Part 1 or the 500 word limit for Part 2 will not be assessed. In-text citations are counted under the word limit, however the reference list is not. Text within tables and graphs are not included in the word count. There is no minimum word count for this assignment. Please include the word count for each section at the end of each section. This assessment is to be submitted online. Your name and ID number should appear on each page of the document as a footer to the main text. Write using prose. Marks will be deducted for use of dot points or heavily abbreviated text (txt speech). The use of subheadings is strongly advised to assist report clarity. RECOMMENDED: The document should be provided in electronic copy using side 11 font – either Arial or Times New Roman. Line spacing should be set to 1.5. Text should be justified. Frequently Asked Questions Hey, this is about an Ice Hockey player. I don’t play Ice Hockey! No-one plays Ice Hockey in Australia! Why don’t you make this assignment more relevant to Australian sports? You know, something that I might be interested in? A sport that most students within the cohort are less familiar with has deliberately chosen to ‘level the playing field’. If the chosen sport was Australian Rules Football, Netball, Cricket, Tennis, or Basketball (sports played commonly in Australia) it may advantage the part of the student cohort that is more familiar with those sports over those who are not. By selecting a sport that most students will be relatively unfamiliar with, this effect is minimised. Additionally, the application of your knowledge to new and unfamiliar situations is an important skill, one that you will likely call upon frequently in your chosen careers. Thinking logically about an unfamiliar sport, or movement, getting to its essence and choosing wisely from your battery of available exercises and techniques, are all essential elements of becoming a good trainer. My strong suggestion in this regard is to familiarise yourself with the movements required in this sport, which may require some self-directed learning Yeah, but Ice Hockey? There’s no literature on it! Actually, there is and some good examples have been provided as additional reading. Admittedly it might not be as plentiful as some other sports but part of this assignment is the research you do to understand the context for the athlete we are discussing. Pubmed / Google Scholar / whatever search engine you prefer is you friend here. One quick note of warning: Sled Hockey is not Ice Hockey. If you want to look Sled [or Sledge] Hockey up on YouTube, you’ll find a fascinating sport – but for obvious reasons, not really one that is conditioned the same way as Ice Hockey. OK, how do you want it formatted? A significant portion of your marks (please see marking criteria, end of document) are assigned to your demonstrated ability to structure your report in a clear, logical manner. As such, providing everyone with a blueprint of what should be included and how would defeat the purpose. What you put in (and what you leave out) are important decisions. They should be guided by the overall intent of the assignment – that is, to write a report analysing recent training performance, and to make recommendations on future training. However, here are a few recommendations. Use graphs and not tables when discussing the trainee’s progress. Graphs are much easier for the reader to interpret. Be careful how much information you put in each graph – too much and they are hard to read. Too little and you end up with lots of graphs, which is not helpful to the reader. Label your graphs with separate captions so that it is clear when you refer in text to a graph which one you are referring to. Group and present your data thematically. Ask yourself – what am I trying to show the reader with this graph? Don’t ever show a graph that you don’t refer to in-text. Conversely, when you are recommending future training, tables are better than graphs – because the training is proposed (i.e. it hasn’t been completed yet), it can be more difficult to graph it. In a table, you can format it so that the reader can see what you’re going to ask the trainee to do. How formally do I have to write this? This is an academic piece of writing, so write formally. In this FAQ section, and the comments on the exemplars (below) taken a deliberately conversational tone. This tone is not appropriate for your report. Write in the 3rd person – ‘It is recommended that…’ rather than ‘I recommend …’, for example. The quality of your grammar IS being assessed. Take the time to ensure that the document is clearly written, appropriately formatted, and spellchecked. These basic elements should be easy marks for all students to achieve. Too often students submit obviously rushed work with poor quality control – take the time to check the details. I have more questions – what’s the best way of getting in touch with you? Remember, typically the fastest reply (besides via my face) will come via the course wide forum. Alternatively you can either email me ([email protected]), grab me at the end of a lecture or practical, or get in touch to set up a private chat (face to face, or on Zoom) with myself or Hunter/Chloe. 2021 Suggestions and exemplars from previous submissions a. Provide a review of the current exercise program (i.e. Are the current exercises, exercise order, rest periods, etc. relevant to achieving the desired outcomes for this client? Why/why not?). (Suggested 500 word maximum)
