Moral Dilemma in “Invisible Man” and “A Summer Tragedy”
The decisions a human being makes in life are not always dictated by what they thi
nk is right. Sometimes, decisions are made purely due to circumstances. As a result, humans choose what they think may bring out the best outcome amongst other undesirable outcomes. Life is not always fair, and the lives of those born at the time of deep racial discrimination in America was full of challenges every single day. This is what we find clearly demonstrated in ‘Invisible Man’ and ‘A Summer Tragedy’. The protagonists of the two stories had to make tough decisions time and on, faced by ruthless circumstances eventually resorting to extreme measures in a situation of ‘no other choice’ rather than ‘best choice’.
In the stories ‘Invisible Man’ and ‘A Summer tragedy’, the protagonists make decisions at several points, each being difficult and even morally challenging. In the “Invisible man”, the protagonist first chooses to accept a humiliating scholarship because he wants to study further. He is later forced to take a job at a paint factory to make a living since his scholarship is revoked. He joins the Brotherhood in order to make use of his oratory skills but is expelled and even sought to be killed.
