This research project is about a New York City neighborhood and must be presented in multimedia format (examples:PowerPoint, charts/photos, a short film, or a combination). The project will build on information gathered for Assignment #3.

- Describe the issues confronting the community and how they have been impacted by New York politics (20%)
- Focus on a current policy initiative and explain the problem it is meant to address (20%)
- Describe the constituency being served by the initiative(20%)

Jaspreet Kaur POL 201: Assignment #3 - Crime in New York City April 11, 2021 Step 1 Seven major felony offenses in New York City Seven major felony offences in Midtown North Precinct Step 2 The essay Crimes that fall under the major felony offenses have often been seen in different areas of New York City. The crimes that take place in majority include grand larceny and burglary. However, in the last ten years, a shift has been seen in various crimes as the numbers are showing major differences. In order to see this shift in detail, it is important to notice the shift according to the precincts. The data of precinct show major changes in many of the felony crimes in the last four years. It can be seen that the illegal manslaughter in 2017 was just 1, which has increased to 4 in 2020 (NYPD, 2021). It means, the illegal murders are increasing by one percent on an average. However, there have also been reductions on some of the crimes such as rape and grand larceny of motor vehicles. The overall crime rate of the seven felonies has reduced from 2411 to 1701. In other words, there has been a reduction of such crimes by 29.44 percent in the last four years. As per the report shown by CompStat 2.0, the rates of most of the crimes are showing a reduction in the Midtown North Precinct. However, a slight increase has been seen in burglary. However, there has been no such disproportionate percentage highlighted in the CompStat on any of those crimes. Some cases of robbery have been seen on the bank of Hudson River. The number is very less though. The fall in the rates of most of the crime is mainly due to the formation of the strict policies and support of the police and administration. The other reason for the same is the increase in the rates of arrests. It is believed that the tough policies framed during the administration of the former mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, have played a great role in this regard (nber, 2003). Another reason behind this is the increase in the levels of education and rates of employment. Between 2009 and 2018, the job opportunities rose by 820,400 which included various industries such as healthcare, hospitality, and business services (DiNapoli, 2020). It caused a difference in the salaries of the people to a great extent. Just like all the major areas of New York City, the Midtown North Precinct has also seen an increase in the income as well as lifestyles of people. This is one of the reasons behind the reduction in crimes in the area. The graph clearly shows that the Midtown North Precinct has seen a fall in the crimes to a great extent. It has been one of those areas of the city where the overall felony offence rates have fallen drastically in the last few years. Hence, it can be said that the felony fares better than the whole of New York City as a whole. The reason being that the administration is strict in this area covered by the precinct and the lifestyles of the people have seen a great amount of change owing to which they have understood the impacts of such crimes on individuals, their families and the society as a whole. The area stands as a lesson for all the precincts of New York City that proper administration and adherence towards the laws and regulations do help in reduction of heinous crimes to a major extent. Also, if the administration takes proper steps regarding the welfare of the people including rise in income level, employment opportunities and education, it also will lessen the chances of such crimes.
