Find a detailed photo image of your own to colorize. Pick something where you will be using the pen tool for selection on at least 2/3 of the photo. It must be at least 2mp.(Google Images Search, Tools/Size/Larger than 2mp)It must be a full color image. Do not pick a light or white flower, overlay mode does not work if there is no highlight/lowlight/shade.

This is a Pen Tool Practice. Do not use wand, lasso, or other selection methods. Make selections with the pen tool in Path mode. Save all Paths, name paths. Color on New layers.

Watch the tutorial"Colorize a Black and White Video Instructions", and use what you have learned from previous Adobe tutorials to colorize the flower Photo.

Steps:

  1. Open the photo in Photoshop

  2. Duplicate the background layer and turn off the background layer so it is no longer visible.

  3. Desaturate the foreground flower layer. Rename that layer as b&w flower

  4. Create a new blank layer on top of your flower layer. Make the layer Blending Mode Overlay, not Normal. Each layer must be in Overlay blending mode. This will make the shadows, highlights, and texture show through.

  5. With the Pen Tool, draw your first Selection. (Do not use shortcut tools such as quick mask or magic wand, use the Pen tool!) I will look for points and paths when I grade.

  6. With your selection drawn with the pen tool, go to your Paths Palette.Double Click the Work Path to Save the path.

  7. Right click the work path to Make Selection. It may be helpful to Feather the Selection a couple of Pixels

  8. Use several different brushes, and several different tints and shades of hues to hand paint a new color scheme for the whole flower, one selection at a time.

  9. Do not paint the flower as a similar color. Pick something fun, something new, rainbow, cool colors, superimpose textures... have fun!

  10. You should have a work path saved for every color group. Eg: petals, center, leaves, background... (you do not have to colorize the background).

Keep in mind, If you want to make the petals blue, use different tints, shades, and values of blue, painting at 10-50% opacity with different size brushes. Use brushes with soft edges.
