Case study #2 ( or an alternative exercise instead of that) 10% of your final grade Due date Aug 6, 2021 @ 11:59 pm Instruction: You are invited to write a review/critique either about the whole course as one big topic, or one specific theme/presentation of your choice. Please, choose to do either the course as a topic or one specific theme/presentation, and remain consistent throughout your work. Please, remember writing a review/critique involves more than pointing out mistakes. It involves conducting a systematic analysis of the topic, then writing a fair and reasonable description of its strengths and weaknesses with evidence that supports your point. The purpose of a review/critique is to demonstrate your skills and to show that you understand key concepts in relation to the area you are writing about. When you point out strengths and weaknesses, you are invited to provide reliable recommendations as well. Your feedback needs to be constructive. Whether you write about the good, about the bad and/or about the ugly supporting evidence must be included. Your contribution MUST be collegial, but you don't have to agree with anything related to the course material. Be respectful, and feel free to challenge ideas. When challenging ideas, please refer back to facts, evidence, methods, data, etc. When talking about 'experience' feel free to use personal anecdotes. A strategy called "hedging" will help you express positive and negative review with varying levels of strength. It will also help you express varying levels of certainty in your own assertions. Grammatical structures used for hedging include using modal verbs (could, can, may, might). Using modal verbs are helpful to soften absolute statement. Using qualifying adjective and adverbs (e.g. possible, likely, somewhat, etc.) allows you to intrude a level of probability when writing your comments, observations, suggestions. Tentative verbs (e.g., seems, indicates, suggests, etc.) also allows you to soften absolute statements. When you write a review, and you are pointing out problems you are expected to suggest solutions. Your suggestions have the potential to become real actions. If you are satisfied with something, reasoning, factual evidence can make it visible why and what worked in that specific situation for you. There is as much value in negative as in positive review. It might feel odd, that you get marks reviewing the content of your course, but remember that you are doing a review of the course related topic(s) in a systematic way, you are appraising your knowledge and understanding in the first place, when connecting those information with your own professional and personal experiences related to the field. You might look into or search for material that was not part of the course/topic but it sparked interest when you were thinking about it from a perspective of evaluation or further suggestions, or proves your point, and extends your knowledge. Doing this exercise, you can not only get marks for the final assignment, but you can review course material and that can be your early/or timely start of preparing for the final test (kill two – or actually three - birds with one stone). The reviewing exercise is an objective process about the topics and skills that we discussed. The ask you to have minimum of 5 clear and separate reasonings about your (positively/negatively) critiqued topic with evidence, and suggestion, along with minimum of 5 clear and separate examples that show how you can connect the course material to your own professional/personal experiences, and it proves either the usefulness of what you learned during the course, or points out areas that were not covered, and you think it would be important to cover them in the future. Please, remember, you are NOT evaluating/reviewing your professor (that is a different forum and that is an anonymous process done by a third-party institution outside of the college).
