1.0 Introduction
The development as well as affordability of advanced technology, the consideration of business profit increase and the need of capacity expansion has paved the way for the increasing use of automation in commercial production. Use of automated technology in production has generated the scope of improving the quality of products and services of business organisations. Industrial automation has also improved the degree of efficiency, making business expansion easier and higher production possible. Industrial automation in business production, as mentioned by Sommier et al. (2019), has also been the current trend in the modern world, where the use of manual labour is reduced to minimal levels and is retained for luxury items such as the handcrafted products. Along with industrial automation, the declining rate of jobs for employees has also emerged as a major issue as business organisations’ motive of securing higher profit through use of automatic technology is cutting jobs, making the situation worse over time and requiring strategic solution formulation.
The discussion on the topic of scope of offering jobs in the context of diversification of business industries, the political changes, and the impact of cultural background, the increasing eligibility criteria and the impact of globalisation has accumulated satisfactory numbers. It is seen that the researchers conducted on the mentioned topic relating to employability have presented their difference in perspectives in terms of respective markets and countries. In terms of modern discussions relating to employability, as affirmed by Madakam, Holmukhe and Jaiswal (2019), the impact of online market in the form of the rise of the e-commerce has also been discussed ample times. Although all the previously discussed research topics have been able to identify the fact that increasing number of humans in the world is making the scope of finding job tough. It is also seen that ample researches have also been conducted upon the topic of industrial automation. However, it is seen that there has not been much consideration and focus lay on the aspect of industrial automation in the context of its contribution in lessening scope for jobs. In the context of the food and beverage industries, where the degree of industrial automation has increased excessively and is casting influence on the number of jobs in the industry, has not been discussed properly, which the current research aims at discussing.
The food and beverage industry is consistently growing at an equally proportional rate of that of the population of the world and the scope of finding jobs in the industry is moderately high. The food and beverages were made in traditional manners so that the taste of the food and beverages retain their traditional appeal. However, it is seen that the demands for food and beverages have increased remarkably over the year, mainly due to the rapid increase in global population (Population Matters, 2019). In addition, the popularity of globalisation has increased the scope exporting food and beverages in foreign markets, making the traditional methods of production altered with industrial automated technology, which requires less manual power and offers high production in a very limited time. It is seen that in the food and beverage industry, due to the increasing use of industrial automation of production, the employment has reduced significantly and requires proper assessment.
2.0 Problem Statement
The uses of industrial automation are increasing production, speed and quality, helping businesses to become profitable, while reducing the scope of jobs for employees, making them face monetary crunch and crisis of career opportunities. The uses of automatic machinery is helping in increasing the production capacity, efficiency of work and are able to exert more control over the use of ingredients for formulating desired products, making quality management easy and food and beverage business profitable. However, as argued by Ehrlich, Neumann, Biendarra and Jasperneite (2019), the automation of business production is reducing job opportunities of employees, hampering the flow of money among the lower strata of the society, from which lower level employees come, offer their manual labour at the workplace, and is the only way of compensating their lack of education and opportunities.
The use of unrestricted industrial automation and employability, as stated by Fernández, Triguero and Alfaro-Cortés (2019), is an issue because, lower scope of employability and higher profit for organisational management would increase the social segregation in terms of society and in the long term development of business, the collective improvement will not take place. As mentioned by Muthukumar et al. (2019), the issue of industrial automation cutting into the scope of employability is a recent concern, due to the fact that in recent time technology has not only become advanced, but also become cheap and available, promoting automation more, while the increasing population is nearing a dangerous unequal proportion. The current research would identify the extent to which automation at food, beverage company workplace would affect employability scope, and what are ways to solve the problem for a better future prospect.
