ENGR 500 New Product Design: Solution Space Assignment Instructions Overview In this assignment, you will characterize the solution space for your new product design. This solution space should clearly define the space of all possible solutions to the need or opportunity you identified. The literary review and benchmark analysis is intended to capture objectives, variables, and constraints that define the solution space. It serves as a baseline for conducting a user needs analysis. Instructions 1. Review/Refine need or opportunity identified. 2. Conduct a literary review of an industry. 3. Perform benchmark analysis. 4. Create/Complete a document based on assignment template. 5. Export/Upload completed document as a pdf file. Recommendations 1. Identify a need or opportunity: evaluate from all three life cycle aspects (business, technical, budget). 2. Conduct a literary review of an industry: choose an industry most closely associated with the need or opportunity identified. 3. Perform benchmark analysis: use your literature review to guide you towards key objective variables (or performance factors) to benchmark (a.k.a. figures of merit). 4. Choose at least 3 other alternative products to benchmark against your proposed new product. If this is a new market, then benchmark against comparable existing markets.
