Woolworths South Africa was founded in the year 1931 in Cape Town, South Africa. There are more than 700 stores of Woolworths which are located in South Africa and in almost 10 other countries in the continent of Africa. Woolworths in South Africa is focused on providing multichannel services along with the presence of Woolworths services offered online and is present across major brands. Further, Woolworths South Africa have three major segments which are in operation in all its 700 stores. These are the grocery stores division, David Jones department stores and the Country Road Group. In South Africa and globally, Woolworths wants to offer its customers high-quality goods and services along with delivering value proposition. The company is better known as Woolies throughout the world. Further, the Woolworths of South Africa consists of the fashionable items, home decors and beauty
products and various types of premium food retail services. There are numerous standalone food stores which are installed in the Engen petrol pumps mostly in the urban regions of South Africa. The Woolworths in South Africa sells a number of clothing and accessory items which are sold under premium brand named as Studio W, Witchery and Trenery and Edition. The founder of the Woolworths stores in South Africa is Max Sonnenberg and the its Roy Bagattini and Hubert Brody who are the current CEO and Chairman of the company in South Africa respectively. As on 2021, Woolworths was able to generate R5.6 billion and a net income of around R4.16 billion. The number of employees working in the 700 stores in Woolworths South Africa are approximately 45000. Further, there is a new division which is added in Woolworths South Africa known as the Woolworths Financial Services.
Analysis
At Woolworths South Africa, there is sufficient values delivered to the businesses. It not just the words which are being typed in the financial reports of the company but are considered as the foundation of the business. It is this preamble which provides direction to the employees and management of Woolworths, helps in taking appropriate actions, encourages to act, provide a behavioural guidance and helps to make certain choices. In fact, the customers are being preferred first and the company strives to make each and every moment of the customers a memorable one. It also helps to improve the quality of the goods and services by delivering high-quality, user-friendly and affordable cost products to the customers. It also helps in inspiring the customers and recognize the differences, it always wants to stay in touch with the existing customers. Also, ot provides a platform where Woolworths can choose the customers who are relevant, accessible and wants products which are presently in trend. Fifthly, the company is responsible as well as accountable for doing the things in correct order and in the perfect manner. The company conducts its duty with full integrity and works in collaboration with one another through partnerships and acquisition that the company can expand and grow jointly with its partners.
Change Management
The change management which will be presented in this paper is the reduction in the length of time which is taken by Woolworths from designing through to store delivery. This is actually reduction in the merchandise cycle by Woolworths South Africa. The company was able to reduce the merchandise cycle time by more than 6 weeks in the year 2012. This has helped Woolworths to enhance the percentage of goods which they purchase offshore, ensures there is lower prices, high value delivered to the customers of goods and services and there is a maintenance of 20% local sourcing in the company while acquiring the merchandises. Due to these changes in the merchandise cycle delivery time, there was huge amount of savings in the costs of the company which helped them to focus on the other business areas which previously remained untouched. Hence, it was transformation of the supply chain of Woolworths which helped them to upgrade the merchandise system. Due to reduction in the merchandise cycle, there was reduction in the number of failures to deliver the right stocks to the right stores and within the correct time without even causing lost sales and high level of markdowns. This has also reduced the huge manual work which was required during the process of planning. It also enhanced the morale of the employees and helped in reducing the rate of attrition (Zager, 2010).
Business Ethics and CSR Activities
It is based on the social developmental programs; Woolworths South Africa wants to make a difference and contribute towards the poor and the needy communities of South Africa. The corporate social responsibilities and business ethics of Woolworths South Africa is based on the four pillars which are informed by the United Nations Sustainability Developmental Growth and are being associated with the overall business strategy. Further, there are numerous issues such as the national developmental priorities and various key social issues which are been looked upon by the CSR activities initiated by Woolworths. Following are the ways in which Woolworths South Africa provides support to the poor children and students of the society. In most of the schools in South Africa, there is improper funding or poor funds availability due to which the children are unable to get education. Firstly, Woolworths have implemented a fundraising initiative which is known as My School Fundraising program along with our Making the Difference with respect to educational initiative for the betterment of the poor children. Secondly, Woolworths have also established a Trust partnership in association with the National Education Collaboration Trust for supporting and enhancing the education level and the system. This is an initiative which is undertaken by Woolworths for the reformation, transformation and improvement of the results of the schools and the poor children. Thirdly, Woolworths is able to address the issues which are associated with the security of food. As a part of this initiative, the company Woolworths have implemented and established a structure or framework where they are able to divert the excess foods from the stores of Woolworths going wastes. Hence, these foods are being donated to the needy and the poor children of the community in a structured charity format. Fourthly, Woolworths usually donates clothes through its clothes bank from either the stores. They also offer pre-loved clothes to the poor people and children of the community in the form of charity and societal entrepreneurship. Fifthly, the company also encourages the employees to participate in the employee community involvement program which helps in delivering various types of assistance to all people, animals, education for all, the caring of the aged people and the environment. Sixthly, there is a collaboration of Woolworths Trust and their partnership with the Child Accident Prevention Foundation which is established in South Africa, Woolworths is able to raise awareness with the parents of the children and the care providers for prevention of injuries during the childhood. Finally, Woolworths provides assistance to the children who are suffering from malnutrition by teaming up with UNICEF for the growth and development of the children in South Africa.
Therefore, Woolworths corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities is centered around education, food security, community resilience and involvement of the employees in the community development programs. In this manner, Woolworths is able to deliver meaningful contributions even after being faced with grave challenges. Therefore, as a responsible corporate citizen of South Africa, Woolworths tries their best for making a meaningful contribution for meeting the economic along with the societal requirement of the community in which they conduct their business operations (Woolworths, 2022).
In terms of business ethics of Woolworths, it is diversity and inclusion of all which is essential for building a workforce with equal employment opportunities irrespective of any race, color, caste, creed, political belief, religion or sex. Further, its Woolworths policy on diversity and inclusion which enabled them to achieve atleast 40% of female and black directors’ representation. By 2023, the board will increase the percentage of females and black directors’ representation to 50%. In Woolworths South Africa, it is entirely quality of life which is the ultimate focus of the company with respect to the employees, customers and various other stakeholders. Finally, Woolworths South Africa emphasizes on the concept of living wage which ensures that the employees and the workers of the company are able to earn a compensation which can help them to sustain a fair living standard (WHL, 2020).

The leadership which was used for the change management in Woolworths with respect to the reduction in the merchandise cycle was delivered based on a value-based leadership program.
