The Biological Approach
Introduction
Personality forms very important part of our character and existence. Essentially, personality can be explain as traits based on behavior, emotional patterns and cognition that evolves from not only biological but also environmental factors. Personality of a person defines how he or she wo
uld perceive things, attitude towards life and approach a challenging situation (Pervin, Cervone and John, 2004). Therefore, developing a strong personality is crucial for success in life. Essentially, that is the reason behind why personality begins very early in the life of children, right when they join school and even before that. It is the true reflection of inner values, thoughts and mindset. Indeed, environment, behavior, character as well as attitude are some of the qualities that molds persona of individual. It helps to attain confidence, positive impact, and self-esteem and polish their communication skills (Dweck, C. S., 2006). By the virtue of this assignment, I have performed extensive analysis on Personality Psychology that has helped me to comprehend some of the practical funds and deep insights that I can apply in real life. I want to begin this review with a powerful quote by Lord Buddha, "We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we Think". This quote has always stuck with me and guided me to seek light even in the darkest days. Therefore, with this assignment, I would like to present my thesis and required argumentation. Furthermore, in this paper, you will find some tools and frameworks that one can incorporate in their personality, which can help, solve complex problems or overcome any challenges one face in life. My chosen topic of personality development is The Biological Approach, which throws light on how, our brain operates and why do we behave in certain way, since that pretty much shapes the personality.
Neurobiological Theories - Scientific Research
People trust Intuition but it is not necessary it is always fruitful or optimal to follow the gut feeling. This is because one is constantly working or acting under the cognitive biases that control our thought-process. As per the book, "Thinking Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman the central premise in the book is the dichotomy between the 2 modes of thought. The brain pretty much switches between on and off state! Human have two systems that control our entire thought process thereby controlling their lives. The first system is instinctive, emotional, sort of like an automatic system. It is referred to as the fast system also called as the sympathetic nervous system (Hergenhahn and Olson, 2002). One can observe that brain is designed to keep us alive and make us survive. Yes, it is part of nature and it is great since it has kept humans alive for so long. However, there is the downside to it as well! The fast system forbids humans to think logically about any incident and forces us to re-act on the first emotion that feel. Scientifically speaking we are constantly going under hyper-aware sympathetic dominance, therefore, fast thinking we generally skip the things that really matter to us. During the evolution of humans, sure fast system was part of the brain that helped us to put ourselves at the top of the food chain. However, the slow system was the reason for humans to flourish in the last couple of centuries. Daniel Kahneman explains that the slow system is slower, deliberate, and more rational which compels to look for logic in order to act appropriately (Kahneman, D., 2011). Therefore, personality will develop holistically if and only if one is cognizant and conscious about to use slow system in order to push it past the fast system. One need to tap into the slow system if they want to source the decision, which are comprehensive, rational and highest area of ourselves. This second system helps an individual to be present in life as well as guide them to comprehend the meaning of being better, thereby helping one to control their...
