Weighting 15% Total Marks 100 marks Task Summary In this individual task, you are expected to develop a plan for an information sheet on a medical condition for clinicians (Nurses, GPs, specialists or other allied health professionals) to be submitted in Assessment 2 Part B. The length of the plan is 500 words (+/-10%), excluding the reference list. HBD106_Assessment_Part 2A_Brief_Plan for the Information sheet_M3.1 Page 2 of 6 Context Being a nurse, you will communicate with clinicians (Nurses, GPs, specialists or other allied health professionals) about your patient’s medical condition(s) on a regular basis. This assessment task will help you to gain skills about what types of information you should include in an information sheet while communicating with a clinician. This assessment aims to bring together knowledge about individual body systems and how various conditions can impact multiple bodily systems, with signs and symptoms seen throughout the various systems, investigations and treatment. Please note this assessment task (2A) is a preparatory task for Assessment 2B, where you will prepare an information sheet on a medical condition for clinicians. Task Instructions To complete this assessment task, your plan must follow these steps: 1) Choose any communicable or non-communicable disease. 2) Research this condition and the bodily systems that it impacts. 3) Outline a plan for your information sheet. • Your plan for the information sheet should include information about: (a) Burden of disease, (b) Signs and symptoms, (c) Information on investigations and treatments based on the latest scientific evidence. (i) You can also include any screening tests and links to other helpful resources. 4) Describe the pathophysiological process and identify medical terminologies/ definitions (where appropriate) that you will require for your information sheet. Please also note that • You are required to present your own original work using multiple academic references from academic books, journals and other credible sources. • You should present your work as double spaced text. Dot point entries and pictures can be used. • Academic references are to be included on a separate page using APA (6th ed.) guidelines. Referencing It is essential that you use appropriate APA (6th ed.) referencing style for citing and referencing research. 1.0 Introduction to the disease
1.1 Malaria
Malaria is an acute febrile illness. It is caused by parasites such as female mosquitoes that transmit the disease to humans. A large portion of world’s population is at the risk of getting infected with this life-threatening disease. The disease has a incubation period of 7 days and repeated frequent cycles of fever are reported.
It is an ancient disease first reported in 6000BC and thought it was caused by bad air. Later, in 1880 Dr. Alphones Laverane discovered that it was caused by Plasmodium while studying blood samples and won Nobel prize in physiology for his work.
2.0 Cause of disease
Plasmodium is a protozoan parasite which is responsible for causing the disease. There are four different types of plasmodium species that infect humans with malaria: P. malariae, P. vivax, P. falciparum and P. ovule.
