Hello Everybody! This week, you will be writing the first draft of your essay on socially responsible companies. Now that you have looked at the readings, videos, and websites of three socially responsible companies (The Body Shop, Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, and Patagonia), you should have lots of information to include in your essay. Of course, you may include information from other progressive companies that you know about or have researched if you want. The essay prompt is: What do progressive companies care about?’ You should write on three things they are concerned with (eg. employee welfare, the environment, etc.), and these three things should be listed in your thesis statement. Your essay should have an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. It should follow the Essay Outline Chart that you turned in to me in the module for Week 8. The essay should be from about 500 to 650 words long, and it is DUE ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15. I have made a Screen Cast video which explains how to write this essay and will include this and the Powerpoint in the Week 9 Module. Your essay will be uploaded through Turnitin. This is an online tool that teachers use to make sure that students are not plagiarizing. It compares what you write to what is on the Internet, and if you are copying, you can get a zero on the essay. I would suggest starting the essay early and sending it online to The Writing Center for help. You can turn in your essay online and they usually get it back to you within 24 hours. You should spend about 10 to 15 hours writing it if you want to do a good job! At that time, we can also go into Zoom if you like. Socially Responsible Companies How would you feel if you discovered that the person who sewed the dress you loved was a twelve year old child? It is not a good feeling to think that this child is not doing what he or she is supposed to do, which is playing and studying. People nowadays are more aware of these and other situations and are looking more for socially responsible companies. These company's main objective is to produce consciously and responsibly. When we search for these types of companies, we need to be careful because some companies are concerned with helping the poorest, but pay employees badly and hire factories that mistreat employees. To be socially responsible, the company must be concerned with social and environmental aspects, not just one of them. Socially responsible companies care about employees’ welfare, animal testing, and the local population. Socially responsible companies are concerned with their employees' welfare. Many companies are famous for hiring factories that have forced labor. Nowadays 20.9 million people are being forced to work several hours in terrible conditions receiving unfair wages. In some factories, the employees are not allowed to go to the restroom and have to wear adult diapers to contain their own waste. On the other hand, progressive companies care about the people who work at the factory that they hired. For example, the clothing company, Patagonia, before sending an initial order with a new factory, they send a member to visit and verify the conditions. Google is another company that values its employees’ welfare. High salary, gourmet meals, fitness, and laundry facilities are some of the advantages Google’s employees can enjoy. Also, Google pays their employees good wages, which helps move the economy. The employees have enough money to support their families. On the other hand, Walmart pays very low wages; consequently, the employees need to turn to public assistance programs and food stamps. Another issue the progressive companies are worried about is animal testing. A lot of companies are against animal testing. Not only is animal testing expensive, but it’s also inefficient. This test only predicts human reactions forty to sixty percent of the time, while other alternatives are accurate eighty percent of the time. The company that is fighting against animal testing is The Body Shop. They created the Forever Against Animal Testing Campaign. They have already collected 8 million signatures, becoming the biggest campaign against animal testing. Unfortunately, 500,000 animals are still tested on each year. As a consumer, we need to be more diligent about what the companies are saying. One example is the beauty company Loreal. They do not test on animals in America, however they test on animals in China. Progressive companies value the local population by using products that are Fairtrade certified and donating to charities. Fairtrade is an organization that attempts to reduce the exploitation and poverty of farmers and artisans. The farmers earn enough money to afford life's essentials, like health care, education, and food. Ben & Jerry’s; for example, uses five Fairtrade Certified ingredients in their ice cream: sugar, cocoa, vanilla, coffee, and banana. They also donate money and ice cream to charities every year. Donating to charity is the perfect way to make a difference in the world. You change other people’s life. That is what happens when a person buys an ice cream from Ben & Jerry's because part of the money goes to charities. They have been helping hundreds of people all over the world since 1985. While some companies are concerned only about profits, socially responsible companies are concerned about respecting their employees, fighting against animal testing, and impacting communities. There are just a few companies that think socially in all aspects, but these types of companies are growing. Everyday companies are increasingly integrating socially responsible programs into their business and helping our world to be a better place for our children.
