The groups will be responsible for leading a presentation of not more than 30 minutes on a relevant contemporary strategic management problem that challenges management in a particular sector of the Tourism and Hospitality industry. Each group should develop appropriate corporate and /or business level strategic solutions to address the challenge. Some sectors within the Tourism and Hospitality sectors that may be of interest include the following; 5* hotel industry, Budget accommodation sector, convention centres, resorts, cruise ship industry, airline industry, theme parks and entertainment facilities. Please note that this assignment focuses on a sector and not an individual organisation. Each group will have to explain the process through which they identified the strategic management issue, the strategic management concepts involved and how the proposed strategic management solution was developed to address the identified challenge for the chosen Tourism and Hospitality sector. This must be a high-level managerial presentation. The key to the presentation is to make it informative and interesting. In particular, your presentation will demonstrate your understanding of the strategic management process and its application in identifying challenges faced by the tourism and hospitality industry including the relevant strategic recommendation that you have made. Grading Criteria / Rubric A Grading Rubric is posted in the subject Assessment block on Moodle. This Assessment represents 25% of the final grade for the course. Peer Review Evaluation A peer group review process of Questions and Answers will engage all students in the class in an extended discussion of the Group Presentation. Each group must plan and prepare for this session. The End Environmental Sustainability in the Hotel Sector ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN THE HOTEL SECTOR THE HOTEL SECTOR o A company that deals with customers' satisfaction and if focused on meeting leisurely needs rather than basic ones (Novak 2017). o Consist of a broad category of fields within the service industry including and not limited to lodging, event planning and food and beverages. o With all this services the Hospitality industry contributes to 60 million tons of CO2 emissions. PESTEL ANALYSIS - ECONOMIC o Global economy is in a ‘synchronized slowdown’. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), global growth had a slight increase of 3% in 2019 after significantly decrease from 3.8% in 2017. However, this is the slowest growth since the global financial crisis in 2008 ("The World Economy: Synchronized Slowdown, Precarious Outlook", 2020). o The political tension between US-China is expected to reduce GDP by 0.8% by 2020 (Lee, 2020). o The spread of Coronavirus also brings instability to the world economy. Global GDP in the first quarter of 2020 is expected to decline by 1.2%, Japan and European countries will be in recession. ("Bloomberg - Are you a robot?", 2020). o The world inflation rate is remaining stable at around 3.5%. o The world average unemployment rate was 6.96% in 2019 and predicted to decrease by 0.1% by 2020.  In general, the economy has a great influence on accommodation sectors, the growth of GDP along with stable inflation and low unemployment ratio will increase people's living standard, thereby increasing the demand for leisure activities. PESTEL ANALYSIS - SOCIAL o Change in lifestyle: people are more concern about healthy life and eco friendly. According to a research done by the Southern Cross University for 913 American and Australian, 93% participants showed a concern toward environment and 77% of them care about sustainable lifestyle (Ellsmoor, 2020). o Social pressure and the surge of living standard. As mentioned above, economy growth increases people’s wealth and living standard. Besides, the development of social media also boost the travel demand of people when there are so many gorgeous information urges people to explore. o Growth of Airbnb. With the principle of "home away from home", Airbnb is growing with tourists because of the low price, convenience and unique experience for customers. PESTEL ANALYSIS - ENVIRONMENT o Climate changes - one of the biggest problems that the world is facing nowadays. The world’s temperature increases leads to various consequences such as: melting ice, extreme weather, etc. For example, Australia temperature is higher lead to longer bushfire. With the rapid spread of coronavirus, a range of hotels and entertainment venues are closed worldwide. Along with the increasing environmental problems, the hotel sector needs to embrace sustainability for long-term development. This will not only bring a significant contribution to the environment but also produce competitive advantages.
