Research Questions6 References7 1. Rationale for Choosing the Topic The entire world was taken aback when Covid first struck in the year 2020. Since then all of us are grappling with the deadly coronavirus disease and the unexpected financial crisis it brought along with it. The nature of this virus is such that it necessitated people to maintain social distancing as well as to stay in isolation (Roberto, Johnson & Rauhaus, 2020). The mortality rate of the virus is relatively higher in comparison to other diseases and the transmission rate too is exceptionally fast, due to which national lockdown was imposed in several parts of the world. Hence, several people lost their jobs and many multinational companies announced recessions, which shrank the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to a considerable extent. The shutdown of businesses have taken a toll on Australia’s economy and made it to lose its nickname ‘The Lucky Country’ as it enters into recession after a period of almost 30 years. 2. Literature Search and Literature Review Search Strategy A suitable browser, Google Chrome has been used, in which the search engine, Google Australia has been visited. The URL of the search engine is www.google.com.au. Then the database, Google Scholar, has been visited, where suitable keywords such as covid-19, impact of covid-19, impact of pandemic on business, impact of Covid on Australian retail businesses and impact of Covid on Australian supermarkets have been fed in order to fetch suitable journal articles related to the topic. Furthermore, the filter “Since 2017” has been used and “Include patents” search limiter has been deselected. Finally, only those papers have been selected, which were available in PDF or HTML versions, as they were free to be accessed. Following themes have been established from the journal articles gathered: Impact of Covid-19 on Various Sectors during Pandemic According to Lim et al. (2020), growth in GDP was negative in two consecutive quarters of the year in March and June respectively. Because of the pandemic, the international borders were also closed, which led to a sharp fall in the number of tourists as well as students that are enrolled in universities. This affected the tourism industry as well as the education systems in a severe manner. Tourism contributed approximately 3.1% to the total GDP of Australia in the year 2018-2019. Aviation industry has suffered tremendous losses due to the cancellation of visas of passengers belonging to the coronavirus affected countries. People are afraid to travel thinking what if they are stuck in the midst of a lockdown. Major airline companies like Lufthansa and Cathay-pacific have cancelled almost 70% of their flight services (Lim et al. 2021). Several layoffs are taking place in the aviation industry since there is no business whatsoever due to Covid restrictions imposed in multiple countries. As stated by O’Sullivan, Rahamathulla and Pawar (2020), Covid-19 has affected people’s social groups too. Unemployment, poverty, debt have all contributed to people resorting to substance abuse especially alcohol. Domestic violence as well as sexual abuse has also been on the rise since unemployment has to the nerves of some people. This can even lead to stressful situations resulting in development of mental illnesses. According to a survey, 20% Australians have resorted to drinking alcohol and an aggregate of 70% people were found to drink more alcohol than usual do (Lim et al. 2021). Major sports events such as Olympics, Wimbledon are all either postponed or cancelled furthermore denting the prospects of already struggling industry of travel and tourism. As stated by Siddiquei and Khan (2020), coronavirus has affected hospitality sector too in many ways since all restaurants, hotels, bars have been shut down rendering millions of people jobless. Customers are choosing to stay at home because of the situation causing the pubs, lounges, cafes and restaurants to stay out of business. A large amount of labourers is forced to leave their workplace and settle for some other source of income. Stock markets have been severely impacted too with Australia expecting the worst kind of fall ever since the year 1987. Central banks worldwide have slashed their interest rates to attract the customers but these advances are not helping the investors. The banks need to ensure that disrupted economies are functional even while the virus outbreak continues to shatter the economy. The government has a critical role to play in addition to providing slashed interest rates by furthermore introducing monetary and health policies that will help its customers in this multi-faceted crisis. According to McKibbin and Fernando (2020), Covid-19 has created supply shocks worldwide owing to manufacturing disruptions in East Asia, which forms the epicentre of the entire global network. 3. Research Problem International trade has been hugely affected since domestic economies have damaged and spread out internationally. There is a fear-mongering situation looming over the economic status of the Australian markets. Many media coverage showed the sad reality of supermarkets displaying empty shelves largely because of people’s fear that corona would induce acute shortage of food items (Loxton et al. 2020). This led to many supermarkets being sold out of household items, pantry items and frozen foods such as poultry, fish and meat. Due to factory closures in the overseas by all means (air, sea and road) and shortage of labour the biodiversity was impacted. Approximately 70% of people living in Australia buy their groceries and food commodities from the supermarkets. According to Whelan et al. (2020), Australia’s supermarkets chains Woolworths, Coles and Aldi together holds 77% market

1. Opening Statement
The impact of covid 19 pandemic has been a looming problem in the arena of international trade as domestic economies have been completely damaged and also spread out internationally. The image of the impact of the global pandemic is not quite different in Australia as well. As a result of fear, people hoarded items from the supermarkets leading to the empty shelves of the supermarkets. The supermarkets ran out of household supplies, pantry items and frozen products such as fish, poultry and meat. The biodiversity was also hugely impacted as all the transport and supply chains collapsed as well as due to other issues such as factory closures in the overseas (air, sea and road) and shortage of labour (Loxton et al. 2020).
It has been observed that around 70% of food items are purchased from supermarkets and grocery stores in Australia. According to the research conducted by Whelan et al. (2021), it has been observed that the Australian supermarket structure is heavily dependent on the three major supermarket chains, namely, Woolworths, Cole and Aldi. The three major chains have a huge market share in Australia which amounts up to 77% of the total market. Although these supermarket chains operate in a huge number of stores and openings, they also suffered greatly from the imposition of various rules and regulations associated with the global pandemic. The aspects of ‘work from home’ and ‘social distancing’ problematised the situation greatly. The changing trend of buying in the consumers has greatly affected the amounts of the products in the supermarkets. The concept of panic buying has increased in the wake of the global pandemic, as a result of which, the supermarkets which had adequate surplus during the normal times, started running out of the essential items at an extremely fast pace.
In the wake of covid 19 pandemic, people greatly feared the problems associated with shortage of food. As a result of this, panic buying increased by leaps and bounds. According to Chua et al. (2021), panic buy is determined by two important factors, they are social proof and influence from close relations. Social proof is a kind of psychological and social signal that influences people to select an option that has been chosen by the majority of the populace. As panic buying was an option chosen by majority of the people, due to their inherent fear of scarcity of food, other people got influenced by such a behaviour and followed the path of panic buy blindly. Close relations can also have a major impact on an individual’s choices, attitude, subsequent behaviour, actions as well as decisions. Therefore, as a result of the influence from the close relations, individuals became influenced about panic buying.
The supply chains experienced extreme pressure in meeting the consumer demands that were continually on the rise. In order to boost the supplies, the supermarkets took the help of alternative supplies, however, it did not have any kind of positive effect on the demands. On the contrary, it increased the prices of food commodities to a great extent.
Through the help of the literature review, there is an attempt to gain a detailed insight about different topics and answer the important questions. It aims to find answers to various questions such as the impact of covid 19 pandemic on the various sectors, the impact of the pandemic on the retail supermarkets in Australia and the ways in which Cole, Aldi and Woolworths can address the challenges posed by covid 19 pandemic.
2. Impact of Covid 19 Pandemic
The global pandemic has resulted in a major setback of the global economy. Due to the virus’ extremely high rate of transmission and mortality rate, different countries across the world have announced strict forms of lockdown and imposed other safety measures such as social distancing and home isolation. The world is currently not only grappling with the deadly virus but also suffering from a major financial crisis. The impacts of covid 19 pandemic have been briefed in the following sections.
2.1. Impact of Covid 19 on Various Sectors of the World
The various sectors of the world have been hugely impacted as a result of the global pandemic. According to Barua (2020), many countries have been thrown into recession as well as economic depression as a result of this growing pandemic. With the gradual increase in the number of infected and death cases across the world, the various countries, both the developed and the developing countries, have been experiencing increased numbers and evidences of economic shock. The pandemic has affected and completely devastated the market in terms of demand, supply, supply chains, trade, investment, price level, exchange rates and so on.
The rules of safety and security imposed strictly by the government in the form of national lockdown due to the increased magnitude of covid 19 pandemic has greatly impacted the travel and tourism industry. Although initially, the travel and tourism industry did provide much attention to the probable impact of covid 19, in the later times, considerable thought was given to the matter. According to Škare, Soriano and Porada-Rochoń (2021), the recovery of tourism industry from the shock of covid 19 pandemic will require more time in comparison to the average expected recovery period of 10 months. The critics also believe that the destructive impact of the covid 19 pandemic on the tourism industry is much greater when the data is compared to the previous studies. The World Travel and Tourism Council reports indicate that 75 million workers are at the immediate edge of losing their jobs as a result of the global pandemic. Based on the same report, it has been observed that the travel and tourism industry has suffered from a GDP loss of about US$ 2.1 trillion. Moreover, the reports also reveal that around one million jobs in the travel and tourism sector of the world are being lost daily due to the widespread impact of the pandemic.
According to the findings of Lim et al. (2021), the higher education sector has also been greatly affected as a result of the pandemic. Due to the prevalence of national lockdowns, the students have been barred from travelling to physical classrooms. Social distancing and home isolation have compelled students to do online classes, thereby impacting the education sector of the globe. According to Marinoni, Van’t Land and Jensen (2020), due to the financial constraints posed by the global pandemic, the students expressed concerns regarding the payment of tuition fees and other...
