Critical Analysis Presentation Guidelines For this assignment, your purpose is to explore and critically analyze three issues that are central to The State of America’s Children 2020 Report. The full report can be found at: https://www.childrensdefense.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/The-State-Of-Americas-Children-2020.pdf In developing a critical analysis, you will make sense of a topic or theme for your audience by identifying, analyzing and discussing three of the issues in the report. The three issues will be selected from the following list: Child Population Child Poverty Income and Wealth Inequality Housing & Homelessness Child Hunger & Nutrition Child Health Early Childhood Education Child Welfare Youth Justice Gun Violence After you have selected the three issues you’d like to further explore, Choose a focus of your overall presentation based on one of the following perspectives: Historical Philosophical Pedagogical/Curricular Policy/ Governance/Legal This will be title of your presentation. For example- The Historical Perspective of Child Population, Child Poverty and Income and Wealth Inequality of America’s Children. OR The Policy Perspective of Gun Violence, Youth Justice and Child Welfare of America’s Children. 1. Using the identified perspective from the above list, analyze what positions about each issue adds to your understanding of that issue, with the goal of shaping your presentation to further explain the issue with respect to the perspective you identified. Be sure to define the issue. 2. To develop your presentation, consider what major points the report comments on. For comparative purposes, feel free to look at and discuss data from your specific State. What insight can you give your audience based on your understanding of these issues? How your personal experiences might extend, inhibit, or contribute to your understanding of this issue and the cultural and social inequity perspectives discussed? If you have not had any experience with the issue, how does that lack of experience affect your understanding? What questions are you left asking about the issue? ETC… 3. An effective critical analysis supports claims with evidence. That evidence will come directly from additional readings you analyze, and your credibility depends on how successfully you negotiate the different assertions from the readings. Select at least one journal article from the Current Issues in Education. Discuss how this article contributes to one’s understanding of at least one of the issues you have identified. *** You will need to use a balance of paraphrase, direct quotes, and analysis to develop your claims. Relying on personal opinion is not enough to complete this assignment. Effective critical analysis will depend on careful integration at least two sources in addition to the primary text, and you will need to synthesize the source material toward a significant focus. This is NOT a summary or regurgitation of information from articles. *This is not a written essay. Content should reflect your ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate sources. The content should not be a collection of cut and pasted material. Turnitin will check your submissions for originality. Presentations exceeding 20% on the originality report will be heavily penalized and maybe subject to disciplinary action. FYI Q/A:  I see that a limit of 20% of the presentation can be original.  Does this mean that only 20% of the paper can be my ideas, and 80% should be information from my documented sources? No…This means that your presentation should reflect original thought. While you should support your ideas with research and other documented sources, an originality report of more than 20% means that you relied too heavily on other documentation and did not analyze or synthesize the documentation to create a presentation reflective of your own thoughts. I do not want to see a regurgitation of what the authors’ state because I can get this information by reading the article myself. I want to see you evaluate this information and form your own ideas based on the guidelines of the rubric. This is neither a polarized argumentative document nor a simplistic compare and contrast Paper. The goal is to bring readings into conversation with one another in order to explore issues, work to negotiate differences and distinctions, move beyond pros and cons, and lead the texts into shared dialogue in order to develop an informed perspective about the issues at hand. Start with class readings and other reserved readings, and then move to your own research of books, articles, or websites to create this presentation. Each component of the presentation must be grounded in research or literature and be properly cited using APA style (7th ed). Assignment must be submitted in two formats: 1.
