Zoonotic Disease Response Paper
Rabies Outbreak in Skunks
Introduction
Rabies is zoonotic disease that is caused by viruses Fisher (2018). Viruses are micro-organisms that can only be observed under a microscope. Rabies is a vaccine-preventable disease which means vaccination can
prevent this disease Pieracci (2020). According to the World Health Organization, about 99% of Rabies in humans is caused by the domestic dogs. In the scenario given for this paper, it has been mentioned that there has been outbreak of Rabies in skunk. This is the first time that this type of rabies transmission is being observed and thus it is very dangerous. The health department noted that only bats were positive for rabies till now. Also, the positive cases of skunk would be a new threat to humans. The health department also noted that over 30 skunks, several feral cats, a raccoon and a fox have also tested positive for rabies.

These micro-organisms when get transferred from animals to humans can cause mild to severe illness Brucker (2020). According to the data by CDC, 6 out of every 10 known infectious diseases in humans can be caused by animals. Rabies is one such zoonotic disease that has a 100% fatality rate once confirmed. This situation warrants for some strict emergency action as the people need to be made aware. Many people must have come in contact with these animals assuming that they are healthy. The public needs to be made aware that they need to stay away from the animals and forest for some time. Also, if anyone has any history of a bite or sting from any animal in the last 48 hours then they should report to the government hospital.
Animal to human transmission
Humans and animals stay in close connection with each other due to personal and economic reasons. It is very easy for any zoonotic disease to spread from animals and humans due to this reason explains Winkler (2017).
