Introduction
The case study talks about the problem faced by the employees in tourism and hospitality industry. The problem is burnout, which has
been the largest occupational hazard. The reason behind the burnout includes long hours of service that is almost 24*7, workplace stress and fulfilling the needs of demanding customers. This problem lies when the senior managers are not helpful and do not draw attention on the problems faced by employees.
Symptoms and Reasons for Mark’s burnout
Mark Moore can be labeled as working wounded individual who is putting his best efforts to get success in life. He is working day and night to earn money. He worked as waiter and also in various nightclubs. He has gained master’s degree in hospitality and he is still facing rejections from everywhere he applies (Lederer, Van Niekerk & Okumus, 2017). He is not being promoted within as well as outside the organization despite of working so hard. He is dissatisfied with his current situation.
a) Sleeping Problems: The cause of burnout includes continuously serving the demanding customers, due to which Mark was not able to sleep and thus feels irritated and less energetic at every point of time leading to chronic stress.
b) Depression: Mark was suffering from depression because of his non-fulfillment of personal growth. He was not satisfied with his current profile and he was also getting rejections from other companies, which was very disheartening for him. He is working on the same profile from last 16 years. No one was there to listen (Lederer, Van Niekerk & Okumus, 2017).
c) Boredom: Mark was no more enjoying his job and also has no opportunity to escape from it. For him, the job has become monotonous and chaotic affecting his health. There exists work life imbalance. He is striving for interesting job profile having good pay and job role, which matches his education and experience.
d) Lack of Support and Guidance: The main problem lies with the senior authorities. As mentioned by Mahfooz et al. (2017), they are concerned with the work and never take pains to have the employee feedback. Mark Moore faced the same situation where senior managers do not provide any helping hand and guidance. They do not help the individual in overcoming the situation, which finally leads to burnout.
e) Feedback form Employees: The senior managers never took initiative to take feedback form employees that is how they are feeling while performing the job, are they satisfied or not, what all are the problems they are facing. They do not care and thus making the employee frustrated leading to decreased productivity and increased turnover (Lederer, Van Niekerk & Okumus, 2017). According to me, they should realize that human resource is the biggest asset for any organization. Happy employees results in happy customers and achievement of organizational goals effectively and efficiently.
Organizational Strategies and Tactics
a) Leadership Style: The industry should change the style of leadership. The leadership style followed should be democratic where leaders and the employees are in continuous touch with each other. They together take participative role in the decision-making process and cares for each other. As informed by Rubab (2017), it increases employee engagement, motivation level of employees and reduces stress and employee absenteeism.
