The COMM-petence Project is a chance for you to individually focus on improving a particular communication skill. Using the inventory results and goals you set in Low Stakes #1, you will identify a specific communication skill you want to develop. The COMM-petence Project allows you to research a specific aspect of that skill and techniques to develop it. At the end of the semester, you will be able to point to a concrete, identifiable area of skill development to apply for your life – and to tout on your résumé. Assignment Overview For your COMM-petence Research Brief, you will describe the specific communication skill you want to develop and summarize options for developing it from your research. This part of the project will result in a written informative message following a memo format. The COMM-petence Research Brief should synthesize learning from at least four credible, research-based sources (which you will identify and evaluate for Low Stakes #4). The final product should incorporate all four sources to understand/define the skill and identify some potential ways to further develop the skill. Writing is a learning process. This assignment consists of several graded milestones modeled after a writing process closer to what you will likely experience in your professional life. These milestones allow chances to receive feedback on how to improve your writing and opportunities to incorporate that feedback to improve subsequent drafts. You will identify and evaluate four sources for Low Stakes #4 (20 points), submit a draft of your research brief (20 points), schedule and attend an individualized revision consultation with your instructor (20 points), provide feedback on a peer’s draft (15 points), and refine the document for final submission (100 points). The first two (completed during the first week of class) were the Writing Apprehension Test (WAT) and the Self-Perceived Communication Competence Scale (SPCC). These two inventories give you a sense for your comfort writing (WAT) and speaking (SPCC) in different settings. Please note, they are measures only of your comfort and not of your skills or abilities. The other three give you a sense for the communication skills you believe you already have and those you might need to develop: a listening types inventory, a perspective taking inventory, and a communication competence inventory. Together, these inventories give you a picture of you as a communicator. Because communication competency is a skill you can continuously improve, you will work to develop your strengths and weaknesses this semester. In this assignment, you will reflect on your results and set goals for your learning in BMGT 205 this semester. To do this, please: 1. Summarize your results for each of the five inventories. 2. Identify areas of comfort and/or competency you already have. Then, discuss how you plan to grow in those areas across this semester. 3. Use the space below the line to write your response. My score in first inventory WAT is low (36). As an international student who just learned the language, I feel that writing in English does not give me the ability to explain my ideas about the subject. I feel that writing in English is totally different than writing in my mother language (Arabic), because all the learning that I got in school is about Arabic, it made it difficult to replace those skills to fit English. I have been told that my weakness areas of writing are “run on sentences” “and organizing thoughts”. I will keep working in this class to improve my skills. My lowest SPCC scores in Meeting and talking to strangers, I got high score in group. In the English school we were encouraged to talk to strangers for learning the language, but I found it too difficult, not only because the language but also because different culture, I know in the business world talking and interaction with stranger is important, therefore I will be working on developing these skills. I got a high score in group because I know talking and working with groups is important for learning in school and in the business world. For JBTC test I got “involved.” Listening is the first step for learning, I like listening to others carefully when they’re talking, I ask questions when I don’t understand a word.
