Background of the Leader
The background of the leader who has been selected here is Mary Teresa Barra who is currently serving in the profile of the CEO that is Chief Executive Officer of General Motors Company. She was born in the year 1961 in Royal Oak, Michigan, US. Barra completed her graduation from General Motors University that is now known as Kettering University from where she obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in the stream of electrical engineering. After this, she attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business and from there, she received her Master's Degree in Business Administration in the year 1990. From the early days of career, she has a great interest in leadership skill and for this; she is today the first female CEO of a major automaker company (Hurley & Choudhary, 2016).
Coming to the career of Barra, she started her career as a co-op student of General motors and her main task was to check the fender panels and the inspection of the hoods to pay for the college tuition fees. From the very formative years of her career, she explored her excellence, and in this way, she was always in the good book of the bureaucrats of the then management officials.
Barra continued to thrive as a professional, adding numerous as well as prestigious accolades to her already dignified career. Finally, in the year 2008, she was nominated in the post of Vice President of Global Manufacturing Engineering. Then in the year July 2009, she chaired as the Vice President of Global Product Development and she retained in that post until February 2011. Finally, in the year January 2014, she became the CEO and the first female head of a leading Automobile company of General Motors, a leading American multinational automobile company (Gover, 2017). Barra is so efficient in her leadership profile that in the first year of her career in General Motor, she issued 84 safety recalls that involved over several 30 million cars. In the year 2017, Barra was ranked as the highest-paid Detroit Three Executive for total remuneration receives $21.96 million. Among the several awards that are won by her the most significant are: she was listed as the 35 most powerful women. Apart from this in the year 2014, she was the Time’s “100 most influential people all over the world”.
