Introduction
Organization is a complex system where a number of works takes place under a roof. The complexity comes when there are a number of departments, number of functional areas and diverse workforce working under single management. Thus, organization can be described as the group of people who are working together to achieve the common organizational goal. The achievement of organizational also relates with the achievement of the personal goals of an employee. Therefore, their behaviour decides the manner in which they will perform in the organization and ensure that th
e coordination among the employees in the organization as to make the workflow in a smooth manner. However, in the organizational work there is always scope for improvement. In this paper, the detailed discussion will be made with respect to analyse the influence of culture, politics and power on the behaviour and the motivational factors that influence the effective work in the organization. Further, the discussion will be made with respect to the application of concepts and philosophies of the organization behaviour that will have an influence on the organizational work.
Analysis of Organization’s Culture, Politics and Power that Influence Team Behaviour
Organizational culture has a varying impact on the motivation of the employees which impacts on their performance and that reflects on the organizational growth. As a change manager, I have been appointed and directed by line manager to analyse the organizational culture, policies and power that have an overall influence over the organizational function.
Organizational Culture
What is organisation culture?
Organizational culture can be defined as the assumptions, beliefs, values and the way the interaction takes place that contributes to the social and psychological environment of the organization. Shahzad et al. (2017) have further added that organizational culture consists of organizations vison, norms, system, symbols, beliefs, assumptions and habits. These determines the culture and the manner in which the organization operates to achieve their goals and further influence the behaviour of the employees to achieve the goals.
Organizational culture varies from organization to organization and it has a deep impact over employee performance. Felip, Roland and Leal-Rodriguez (2017) have discussed that typical power where the power lies in the centre of management such as spiders web where the focus in on the centre. Organizations, which are having this kind of power centric culture, are more efficient in responding to the events, they are very much dependent on the continued success, and they do address the critical issues. Further, the power centric culture helps in properly control and utilization of resources.
Another form of culture that exists in the organization is the task culture. Warrick (2017) have discussed that task culture is job oriented or any project-oriented work. The task culture is associated with the organizations, which have a project based structural design for their workforce. The nature of this culture is more on getting the work done and brings together the appropriate resources and the right employee in the right level in order to make use the relevant resources that are at disposal to complete the entire work. The task culture is basically depends on the unifying power of the group as to make sure the improvement of efficiency takes place and help the employee to identify their objective in the organization.
The organizational culture has a major influence of the local place. The societal norms and values along with the customs, create a huge impact over the organization. Dom and Ahmad (2019) have further elaborated that the majority of employee working in an organization belong to the local areas. Therefore, the diversity of manpower is present in the organization, because there are workers belonging from different place. However, they all share common organizational goals to achieve, by shared vision and performance. This drives the team performance, as everyone contributes to the achievement of goals. Similarly, the local political scenario also creates a huge impact over the organization. This includes the policies and the laws for work and general people, which impact their life in a huge manner. This carries in the organization, because they have to adhere according to the rules and regulations formed by the government. Therefore, the behaviour and working pattern of the employees gets impact with the changing political scenario, and that reflects in their performance within the team and on individual basis. The power of the organization is dependent on the hierarchal structure of the organization. From top level management the power gets distributed to the lower-level management in different sections. The manner in which the managers and superiors utilize the power to control an employee or a team of employees, reflects in their performance. An authoritarian approach doesn’t yield positive results with respect to the referent approach, which directs a sense of identification to the employees, with a sense of identification.
Hofstede’s Theory of Application
A typical organization has a diverse workforce. Arditi, Nayak and Damci (2017) have further added that in the globalized business, there will be diversity among the employees and hence more emphasis should be given on the society and the culture awareness will enable any organization to sustain and make growth. Hofstede’s dimension of culture theory and application emphasis more on the cross culture in the organization. Bissessar (2018) have discussed regarding the application of Hofstede’s cultural dimension, which have impact on the organizational culture.
· Power Distance: This dimension explains the extent to which a person who is less powerful in the society is accepted and expects that the distribution of the power will take place unequally.
· Uncertain Avoidance: This dimension describes the extent to which the people living in the society are not ease with uncertainty.
· Individualism vs. Collectivism: This dimension have a focus on regarding weather people have a preference to be left alone or they want to remain in a close knitted environment or society.
· Masculinity vs. Femininity: The masculinity implies that the preference of society is for assertiveness, heroism, and the achievement along with the material reward for their success. However, femininity is based on the modesty, cooperation, quality of life and giving care for the weak people.
· Long-term vs. Short-term orientation: The long-term orientation discusses about the inclination of the society towards the searching;however, the short-term orientation is completely based on establishment of the absolute truth.
Organizational Politics
In every organization, there is a trace of political environment, which are casual, unofficial and are often behind the scene. Lau et al. (2017) have discussed that the organizational politics are beneficial in some way as there is a diverse workforce in the organization and there are possibilities that there will be conflict of interest among the employees, hence the politics will be helpful in resolving competing interests. Hence, there are possibilities that the internal organizational politics if managed properly by the top-level management then the possibilities of conflicts will be minimized and there will be a cooperative working environment inside the organization.
What are the relationships between organisation politics and power and how does it influence team behaviour?
The presence of organizational politics is evident, however if used smartly the organizational politics can help in managing big teams. Mow and Geis (2020) have further added that organizational politics is the individual’s pursuit to fulfil agenda and self-interest in the organization and without having any effort on the organization’s efforts to achieve their own goals. This political pursuit also brings the sense of power as to fulfil personal targets and desires.
The organizational politics and power can be very helpful in managing the team if used in a proper manner. De Clercq and Belausteguigoitia (2017) have further added that a leader using the organizational politics in a positive manner can foster a dynamic workplace as there will be friendly rivalries which will not have any bad influence on the organizational functioning. Further the need to be alert is always important because that will remove the possibilities of any kind of rivalries which can out of control. The power of the manager will help them have their influence when the things are getting out of control and help down the employees getting settled. Being supportive and team-oriented are the qualities that an employee must have and thus it helps the manager to properly utilize the team performance.
Motivational Techniques and Theories of Motivation
Motivation is one of the most important factors which must be in employees that drive the organizational work by keep the organizational goals aligned and achievable. Perryer et al. (2016) have discussed that there are two types of motivational factor that works, which are intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. The intrinsic motivation is the internal desire to perform a particular job. The employees do engage in activities as that provides them pleasure and they develop those particular skills, which will help them to perform the job in an efficient manner. The extrinsic is associated with the external character of the person and unrelated to the task they are performing.
Many motivational theorists who have propounded different kind of motivational theory are applicable in the organization. Karimi and Nickpayam (2017) have further discussed that there are different types of theories. The content theories of motivation discuss the theories made by Maslow, Herzberg and Alderfer. Maslow is considered as the father of needs dependent motivation theory. In the year 1946, he proposed five level hierarchy needs. The needs are psychological, security, love, esteem and self-actualization. The psychological needs are the standard of human needs and the need for survival such as breathing, water, food and the shelter.
The safety needs are the needs associated with the stability and predictability in the life which can be personal, financial, health and wellbeing of family.
The love represents the belongingness needs, which are centred on the social interaction, social relationship, friendship, family and intimacy.
The esteem needs indicate the desire for a...
