Homework 4 1) List the outcomes possible for an experiment where a coin is flipped, and a color is selected at random from the American flag. For example, to get you started, heads and red would be one possible outcome. Count the number of possible outcomes. Describe how you would compute the number of possible outcomes without having to list and count them. 2) a. There is a race between 10 people, 6 males and 4 females. How many different ways are there for the race to end up, if we only consider 1st, 2nd and 3rd place? b. Complete the same exercise, but this time consider that we know a female comes in 1st place. How many different outcomes of 1st, 2nd and 3rd are there now? Bonus: Same exercise, but now we know a male comes in 2nd place. 3) There is a group of 6 politicians, 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans that are going to sit at a table with 3 chairs on each side. How many different ways are there to sit if all three members of each party must sit on the same side of the table? 4) You are given 2 cards from a standard deck. How many different sets of 2 cards are possible if you care in what order you are given the cards. Is this a permutation or combination? Write the formula for either permutation or combination(choose the one that answers the previous question), then fill in n and r. 5) How many different ways are there for all 52 cards in a deck to be ordered? (You don’t need to give an actual number, a number with a symbol is sufficient. A hint is to think about the fact that there are 52 possibilities for the top card.) 6) How many different possible Social Security Numbers are there? You can compute this in two ways. First you can consider possibilities digit by digit. Or, you could also recognize that SSN’s are just numbers if you remove the dashes, so they count themselves as the number increases (don’t forget 000-00-0000).
