Homework #5 Instructions Write response paper to The Phantom Pattern Problem: The Mirage of Big Data (selections) by Smith and Cordes (in Week #7 Content section). In your response paper, you should: i) Reconstruct one of the main arguments from The Phantom Pattern Problem as a deductively valid argument in standard form (e.g., as on Homework #1), and briefly explain the argument. ii) Evaluate whether the authors’ conclusion is correct. Explain your reasons. Some possible questions you might address in your paper: i) Is Smith and Cordes’ criticism of the Big Data movement compelling?; ii) Will appealing to causal knowledge help us to avoid the problem of phantom patterns?; iii) How does Cartwright and Deaton’s methodological criticism of RCTs affect Smith and Cordes’ main claims?; iv) How does “inference to the best explanation” differ from the method of “HARKing” (i.e. Hypothesizing After the Results are Known), which Smith and Cordes criticize? The paper should be at least 500 words, which translates to about 1.5-2 pages doubled-spaced, normal formatting (i.e., 1-inch margins, 12 pt. font, etc.).
